When I replied to my answer from the sewing machine people, they were rather snotty. I referred to the newest update as 2.2. After I did that I realized that it was actually 2.01.
Well, the person replying definitely jumped on that. They went on to say that perhaps I should make sure of what I was talking about.
I guess customer service is another dinosaur that is decomposing out there somewhere. I absolutely HATE calling customer service for a computer matter. I don't think I really have to tell why. When I bought a new computer several years ago, I bought one that is manufactured here in Texas. I, naively, thought that when I needed help, that person would be here in the US. Nope! I still hate that computer - with a passion. I had a major problem with it, and those people had me down on the floor taking the blasted thing apart.
I am not a computer repair person. My best friend went to night school so she could get out of teaching and into IT. She can take one apart, but I also remember her telling me that there were some parts that retained stored electricity. Electricity + touching = SHOCK!
But I was tearing that thing apart. My modem was fried. So now that computer only has a cable modem and no dial up because I was instructed to take that part out.
Eventually they actually sent someone out. That is what I thought I paid for in the super-duper extended warranty. But you have to take the blasted thing apart yourself two or more times before that is even offered. Oh, and it still needs a new mother board. When the third repair person came out, he didn't think that was needed, so . . .
It seems to me that businesses really don't care about making their customers happy. Perhaps it is because there are so many really terrible people in the world that demand too much from these companies. I know dealing with customers can be a pain for them too. A lot of people are not nice. They treat others worse than dirt.
With this silly machine, I have tried to be nice. But when you are looking at mid four figures for a machine, I think you are due some really good service for that machine. I haven't gotten it at all. All I get to do is drop more dollars into it.
Peace.

Wasted day
We began the day taking my car to be checked out. General things like oil change and the check to make sure my little old lady school teacher car that is 11 years old will make the trip to Deluth later this summer. It qualifies as the little old lady school teacher car because it only has about 67,000 miles on it. I taught really close to home! That car wouldn't have that much if it had not been on out trip to the Bad Lands a few years ago.
It is OK. So it will be going. I had kind of hoped to go by train. Oh well.
The rest of the day has been spent trying to load the update for the sewing machine that is supposed to "fix" everything onto the machine. It appears to load, then when I restart it - the same version shows.
So I emailed the customer support with my problems of the bobbin thread coming through to the top of my design. I told them I was doing everything that is suggested - loosening the tension, adding stabilizer, using THEIR bobbin thread (pre-wound by them). When I got the answer back, it included me doing all those things.
I resent the problem telling them that there are several of those machines out here that do the very same thing and the company really needs to address the real problem instead of blaming the operator. They also said to have the dealer check it. I replied I had just gotten it from the dealer, and the dealer doesn't have a clue about these machines and this problem. That is true because one of their instructors is having the very same problem. The dealer is trying to find out why!
Oh well. As I told them I am just loading the bobbin with the same thread so when it gets pulled through, it doesn't show.
Moan, grown. I just am so misused. I did get the scrap book cover for my grandson, Monkey Boy, almost completed. Now I just have the girls' to go.
Peace.

Peaceful Sunday
The day has been quiet. We should have gone to church, but we didn't. I know G would have rather gone to our real church. I wanted to go to the mission church. I have become one of those old fogies I guess. I don't like the new hymal - at all. The mission church is much more modern in the things they do, so the music doesn't bother me there.
It has been a productive day. I made seven toddler hats for the craft show in July. I didn't put embroidery on them - saved myself that headache. They really went fast.
I also fixed the purse that I had been fiddling with. Amazing - when you put the lining in the proper way, it fits!! I was really frustrated with that purse. The idea was really neat. You have a purse that is nothing spectacular, and then you can have other outer purses that you can put it in. I really wanted to have these ready too. Now that I'm not such a dummy I just might be able to do it, but the outer purse will NOT have the extensive embroidery on it.
Perhaps if I can install the update to my expensive update, the embroidery will be right again. I loved the repair man at the shop telling these machines come in a lot. I should have gotten a Brother. I think they will give me about 80% of my purchase price on a trade in. I surely am thinking about it - seriously.
Well - family dinner at Daughter's awaits. I don't have to cook! Yea, yea, yea. Hope your weekend was a good one.
Peace.

Day with the LB
We had quite a day yesterday. It began with lunch at her favorite place - The Black Eyed Pea. We then went to the linen store to buy cushions for the chairs that were moved to the SSB from the lake house. They are so very uncomfortable, and cushions was the least expensive fix - I hope!
From there we found the little vegetable market. That was after pulling into the wrong place that was a little scary. The vegetable place had local - even if from area - produce that really looked nice. They also have a coop going. I may have to look into that.
We ended the outing with a visit to the local ice cream shop. They are under new owners, and they are quite a nice place. They added a little deli. They make quite good sandwiches!
So we finally escaped the heat (the high was 97 although my greenhouse said 104). We trundled off upstairs. I showed her how to put the fabric in the little yo-yo makers. She did well with the exception of not cutting the fabric close enough.
But there always seems to be a down side. My newly upgraded machine would sew about five stitches, stop, make it's warning signal, and the screen would say to re-thread. The first five times I DID re-thread, but I soon grew weary of that. It would occasionally sew about eight inches, and then do its same thing.
I took it back to the store today. They worked on it. It sewed beautifully. It embroidered letters beautifully. I got it home, and it pulled its old stunt of pulling the bobbin thread onto the top of the embroidery design.
I don't have time for that nonsense. My next craft show is July 11. I've got too much work to do. Bah!
But at least I am interesting LB in learning to sew. She has already staked out the other sewing table and machine as "hers." She was busy making plans for the next time she visits. She is a really neat kid!
Peace

Busy day
It is going to be a busier day than normal. I get to have Lady Bug for the day.
Her dad is out of town. They decided rather than put Monkey Boy in day care for the summer, they would hire a baby sitter. Well, yesterday the baby sitter reached her limit. The two argued all day long.
So it was decided that rather than drive the sitter bug nutty, I would take Lady Bug. It really isn't a problem, but I don't want her to feel she is getting punished. She is getting the blame for the bickering. So we will be doing some special things today. I will take her to her favorite restaurant for lunch.
I had planned to do some shopping as it was, so we will just add the lunch to the rest of the things I have to do.
I still want to get her into sewing. I hope there is time this afternoon after we get back. I bought a set of yo-yo makers. After all these years of thinking they were hokey (thinking back to the clown I made of them at camp), we made them in my sewing machine club meeting in May. They really are cute and can be used for many things. I think it would be a quick enough and cute enough craft for her to learn how to do some hand sewing.
So it's time for me to get in gear and get moving. She is being good (as is normal), but I don't want her really bored.
Peace.

Now I remember . . .
We've not had a kitten around here in about 30 years. I think I'm too old! Like babies, you get too old for some things.
I know I kept all of Daughter's children when they were born. Of course, the time I kept them decreased with each grandchild. It wasn't too bad because I could send them home! Having a kitten is so much like having a baby around.
Shadow is nothing but a bundle of energy (I know - some of you are very aware of that). We have an unusual situation around here with him. He lives in a cat playhouse. It is about 5feet square and about 3 feet deep. That gives a lot of space for an 8 week kitten. The reason he is in there is Simone.
I had been worried about her accepting Shadow. Night before last might have been the real test. I took him out for a romp. He is totally wild when he gets out. He is older and thinks he is invincible! He was skittering around here, and I decided that it was time to put him back for the night. I bent down to pick him up, and he tried to run. I grabbed him, and he turned into teeth and claws. About that time I realized that Simone was just right there - all too interested. Needless to say, I had a few wounds to tend to.
Today, I decided to put one of the baby gates we still have around here to good use. I blocked Simone off in the hall (she was really asleep in her crate in my bedroom anyway), and let Shadow out. He ran and played for about 40 minutes, and then was ready to be picked up. Of course, Simone had realized something was up, and she wasn't a part of it.
Shadow is just so active. He ran and ran, skittered here and there playing with anything he could find. It made me worry since he is still rather little. I am amazed at his growth in just a week, but still.
I have to give him "exploration time," but at the same time I worry about him getting into something and getting hurt. Like a child, he has no sense. He just goes on impulse.
I think I will like it much better when he is an aloof adult cat! Kittens are cute. They do funny things. The saying was "the trouble with kittens is they grow into cats," and that was supposed to be bad. Now I can't wait!
Oh, and I almost forgot - the pool is almost filled again!
Peace.

Life's adventures
It seems that if it's not one thing, it's another. We have had the contractor come in and paint the kitchen and breakfast room. That was a blow. I used to do that. But that was then, this is now. It's not going to happen anymore. He also poured the step for my front door. Now if he can come back and lay the tile and do the fence . . . But then we will have to bleed some more money.
I finally got my sewing machine back. In addition to the expensive upgrade, I bought the expensive bobbins that are specific to the machine. I also tried to use the little embroidery machine (that came from Wally World) only to realize that I have lost the power cord. When I thought I would never use that machine again, I wasn't too careful with its accessories.
Monday we came home to find a door hanger from the pool guy. He missed last week, and we had the black lagoon again. We were to call. He said we would have to let out about 8000 gallons of water. The water was "dead" and taking enough chemicals for three pools. It still didn't hold them. So yesterday, we almost emptied the pool. I'm guessing that 9500 gallons went out. Today we can begin to refill ($$$). But I personally don't like swimming in pea soup. So what are you going to do?
He still has to replace the filter ($$$) which is a good 20 years old. When I told him to go ahead, we had not decided to replace out downstairs a/c and heating unit. But things wear out. It seems they do it all at once.
I figure I'll be on a street corner soon with my little cup. Perhaps I could muster some sympathy with: "retired school teacher being devoured by house." On second thought, I doubt it!
Peace.

Yes, I'm here
And I have been here all weekend, but C*mcast has not been since last Thursday. This has been horrible.
I thought I was having computer problems on Friday. I even deleted a program that I suspected of conflicting with my logging on. That wasn't the problem. My problem was one of those slow, insidious little things. I would get error messages that F*refox couldn't find the host. Then I would switch to M*crosoft, and it would fix things - somehow. Then it got to where it couldn't log on.
I fiddled with the modem on Saturday. It wouldn't respond to my sweet murmurs. I couldn't coax it into life. So I bit the bullet and called. I tried letting them send a refresh signal. Nothing. I was beginning to sweat a little.
I called. I was disconnected from the first person. The second tried deleting my modem and then reconnecting it. Nothing. So I had to have a technician come out. The first available appointment? Today between 2 and 5.
Well, the good news it that I am up and running. Thank heavens. When I went to my Y*hoo account, there were something like 350 messages. Most were ads from the groups, but even so.
I went to lunch with G and Daughter yesterday. I asked her how much her air card was. You know - it isn't really any more than my cable connection. I think I am going to change. Then I would have service at the SSB - even though it is s l o w. I know this from Son In Law's. But that's ok. I would have it on vacation this year too. I won't have to pay for internet at the hotels. Yea!
But more than anything - I am back in touch. I can respond when I am directed to a web site. Yes! Things are good.
Peace.

Impatience
I'm keeping Lady Bug today. I love to have her here, but sometimes . . .
She loves to get on the computer. She still plays the toddler games I got her when I was keeping her full time - she was about 2! The big computer in the office is old and slow. She is young and impatient. Put the two together and you get a hung up computer!
She wanted to use one of the games to make her dad a birthday card. She wouldn't wait for the computer to load. I told her not to touch anything for a while. Well you know what she did. I turned it off and rebooted it. I told her not to touch anything for 30 minutes. Her 30 minutes is more like 7. So - hung computer again.
We finally got the program running, but there was something that was still running in the background - I guess - because her picture wouldn't print. I couldn't even turn off the printer.
At this point, the computer has been restarted yet again. We are waiting. I don't know.
I do know she has certainly inherited her patience!
Peace.

Rather expensive day
Today was the sewing machine club day. I wasn't too jazzed about the project, but that has been the case before. I usually love what we do after we finish/ Today - not so much, but then it could be due to the fact I am getting to drop $500.
I really believe there is an intrinsic problem with my machine. I am on my third bobbin case since January. Needles have gone right through them when they begin bouncing around in the bobbin. My threads shred, meaning I get to re-thread a lot.
I was about half way through with the project - shoe stuffers that are embroidered. I was doing the word "right" when my thread kept breaking and the bobbin thread was being pulled through - not the top thread showing.
One of the leaders said she was having the same problem. There is a "fix" for it in the form of an update. My machine is an 11000. There is an update available to make it an 11000SE. The "fix" was for the, you guessed it, the SE.
So trying to put a program on where there is no existing software - well you know the answer. The little tech guy wasn't sure that even upgrading my machine would fix it. The woman there asked if I was ok with the $500 for the upgrade. My response was "6000 or 500 - pretty easy answer!" The machine was a huge paper weight the way it was, and I knew trade in value would have been zip.
So the upgrade of the software is done - the machine worked. It is still there having various mechanical parts replaced to go along with the new stuff. It does great quilting. That's what it was made for. Guess who doesn't quilt!
Peace

Changes have to be made
Mr Shadow came home yesterday. This was after I went to Pets*art and dropped a bundle of dough. That what happens when you think you are out of the cat business.
One of my purchases was a cratel. I have become a believer in crates for dogs. Simone has hers here and at the SSB. She loves it. I know I don't close the door, but she will go to her crate several times a day to nap.
My idea was to train (Ha-Ha) a cat to a crate. I thought it would give him his safe place to sleep. Even the picture on the crate showed a cat, and it said it was the right size for an adult cat. Dream on. He was absolutely miserable in that thing.
I guess I am going to have to take back the kitty playhouse I bought when I had Son's Sebastian and Sasha here. It is like a large parrot cage. It would at least give him room to run and jump.
I feel I need something for him because Simone is showing just a little too much enthusiasm for Mr Shadow. I had him on the bed last night when G came home. Simone tried to lunge at the bed.
She gets excited with human babies, but she is showing such mothering. I don't know if she is seeing Shadow as a baby animal or a snack. I just can't take that chance. He is just a mouth full for her.
Right now, he is living in my bathroom. This is not a good place. It has been taken over by the paraphernalia associated with a kitten. One of the things I bought was the self cleaning litter pan. Expensive!! But I hope worth it. Of course, after I put the blasted thing together is said it was not recommended for kittens under 6 months. Well - guess what!
His crate is also in there, along with his food dish. What I want to know is who ever decided that bathroom doors should be more narrow than regular doors. I wondered this about 15 years ago when I had broken my ankle and couldn't put weight on it. Navigating those doors was a problem. Getting that big a**ed litter box in there was a problem too!
So I guess I will call Son to see about the kitty playhouse. Where am I going to put it? Don't know. But I will find a place. I have to. At least things are never dull. Who says retirees don't have anything to do?
Peace.

Peace.

It's a what?
About 20 years ago, a beautiful orange cat appeared at our house. We had two kitties at the time, and G forbit us from feeding it. Well, that had a lot of influence around here. Soon, not only had we fed it, it was brought in the house.
The accepted feeling around here was that it was a pregnant female. The cat just reacted like a female. It was really big too. We really thought she must have several kittens on board. So, never having had a pregnant cat because the first order on the agenda around here is to have them "fixed," off we went to the vet.
We were on first name basis with this vet. She took over the practice of the vet we used when we moved here - and went into the horse "business." I, like so many little girls, always wanted a horse. So we eventually got three. We had them until Daughter was born. Then we had to sell them. Sad day. Babies and the horse pasture don't mix. I know, I tried.
Anyway, we had dubbed this kitty Noel because it was between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We told the vet all we knew about her. She palpated Noel. She thought it strange that she only felt one kitten. I neglected to also add this was a very long haired cat. When she did further exams, she reported that Noel was Ralph. So we had Ralph for about 18 more years.
Why did I go into such a long, drawn out post you ask. Because it has happened again. Son and DIL dubbed my new kitted Shadow. They had thought about Sassy and some other names (out pets all have "S" names), but Shadow was the choice. We were going to adopt Miss Shadow.
G repeatedly asked Son if it was really a girl, and he said he was pretty sure. They had gone though many names and Shadow seemed to be a really good name for her.
So he called me after the visit to the vet yesterday. She was pronounced to be healthy, but they
gave her treatments for worms and ear mites just in case. She was to get a bath.
Now let me introduce:
MISTER Shadow - yes once again a male, not a female!!

Once again
Today, my focus is once again on Simone. She had been doing so very well. She obviously felt great.l She often acted like a puppy again - at least that's what I'm going to assume since we didn't have her when she was a puppy.
We had "Family Dinner" here last night. Son, Daughter in law, and Wiggle Worm got here right on time. Daughter called and said they would be a little late. That figures - they only live a mile away. Anyway, DIL sked how Simone was doing. I said great. Before too long, Simone began coughing.
I had made Margarita Shrimp and Wino venison on skewers. It is so much easier for me to do that sitting at the breakfast table because I just can't stand all that long. I MAY dropped some cilantro, but it was very little. Plus - we vacuumed after the major part of making the marinade and the stringing. But - regardless, she started coughing.
About the time the others arrived - Simone spewed. Fortunately she had not been fed. But it was bad enough. Nothing puts a damper on a gathering like a spewing boxer.
We have acres of tile down here. It is easier to keep than carpet - especially with the pool. When we replaced the carpet, I gave the edict that (1) you would dry off completely before entering the house - which the biggest kid around here (G) wouldn't do, and (2) there would be no eating in the den. Ha! So when I could, the carpet went and tile came in. I do have an area rug to mark the seating area. It is about 5x7. Where do you think the dog spews?? Of course, the area rug or a few steps further - in the hall.
This morning I was hell bent on giving her her anti-acid pills. She didn't want them. As soon as I got them down, she started her "licking the air" again. This was reminiscent of the last round we had. I just knew she would start the whole thing over again. But things settled down, and she got about 1/3 of her breakfast.
In pet news - we are going to adopt a kitten. Son found three that had been dumped in the area where he was working. He is a kitty-nut. He called Animal Control, and they got two. This one disappeared until the next day. He couldn't just leave her. His plan was to take her to a no kill shelter. They were completely full of kittens. So she came home.
When I was keeping his cats, because one was so bad about liking to watch objects commit suicide, and I was tired of my things getting broken,I bought a kitty play house. His cats went in there at night. Well, kitty is in that right now. They are taking her to be vetted today. If all goes well, she will be spayed and come to us. We only thought we were cat free.
But it's ok. I have been missing a kitty. I'm looking forward to her becoming a member of our family.
That should give Simone something else to get sick over!
Peace.

Swim meet
Tomorrow is the third swim meet of the season. Lady Bug has great confidence in her ability. She is trying to beat all the boys at practice, and takes the whole thing very seriously. Having such confidence is good, but I'm always afraid she might have it shaken if she doesn't do well sometime.
She is a competitor. She is sort of like the race horse that doesn't want to have another horse in the competition. When one of the other swimmers gets close, she pours on the coal.
Last week, Daughter kept telling her I was her good luck charm. I'm not sure that was a good idea because she immediately began asking, no begging, me to come to all her meets. I enjoyed it a lot, but every Saturday?? I don't know if I can keep that up.
Would I do anything in the world for her. You bet - in a heart beat. Guess where I will most likely be tomorrow!
Peace.

Effects of changing weather
We had a front move through here yesterday. As expected the joints announced its proximity the day before. They are still screaming.
Just about the time I think those joints are settling down, something happens that makes me realize they are still there and still talk to me.
This is one of those times. They are waking me in the middle of the night. They scream when I go upstairs to work, but it's the coming down that really hurts. If I could get down on my butt, I think I might try to come down that way. Getting to my butt would probably mean I would go down the stairs head first.
My half hearted attempt to get rid of this excess weight have been just that. I haven't been successful. I tried the dietitian's method. I gained weight. So I think I may have to go back to carb limiting. My body latches on to carbs like there's no tomorrow.
I guess I could stop the Fem*ra. That would do it! The little c would return. That would be a way to lose weight. I saw Son's best friend's mother Monday. She also had breast cancer. After she completed her five year run of the other drug, her cancer came back. I heard she was at death's door. Apparently she really isn't - but she looks really old. She is thin though!
Perhaps we are in for a nice long string for good weather. Perhaps the joints will settle down again. Perhaps I just should make an appointment with the ortho doc.
Peace.

Almost that time - again.
Part of my morning routine is to sit here, reading emails and blogs, drinking my coffee, while listening to a local talk show. Today's topic: hurricane season. It seems like Ike just hit. There is so much that hasn't been repaired yet. They gave the damage amount as $24 billion. Now here we are faced with another season.
We have lived here 38 years. In that time, we have weathered two hurricanes. Alicia was the first. In that one the eye passed right over our house. That was an interesting experience. After the rain and winds, it became beautifully clear. It was calm and dry. We looked in the back yard to see our huge pecan tree split right in half. We expected to lose that tree, but it managed to heal and has given us (but mostly the blasted squirrels) pounds and pounds of pecans. After a bit, the skies darkened again and it all started over again.
With Ike, we were so blessed that the eye went more to our east. That put us on the "dry side" of the storm. While we did have our neighbor's tree land on our garage roof (and he STILL has not had his trees trimmed - the bum), our damage was nil. The worst was losing power. After a hurricane, it becomes very hot. It's like the storm pulls all the air along with it. Of course, September is one of our hottest months.
I think the tv stations are doing a good job however. With Ike, a lot of people in the low lying coastal areas (we are 60 miles inland - at least) didn't think they needed to evacuate. They had ridden out storms before, so they were staying put. Of course, the experience with Rita, it is no wonder they were going to stay put. People died on the freeways in their attempt to flee a storm that didn't hit here.
I don't think folks will decide to stay put next time. According to the paper today, four more bodies from Ike have (finally) been identified. That leaves at least one body to still be identified - but I think there are still a lot of missing folks. When houses are washed away, you know bodies have to be washed away. If they went into the gulf, they are gone.
Anyway, I am sure preparations will begin early this time for a lot of people. I was able to find a portable digital tv last weekend. That is really good because my little analog I have had since Alicia will be obsolete. Those little tv's really help to feel connected, and I feel much better with this little new one. That is about all we need to do here to be ready. I always keep canned food, and with the power going out, all the stuff in the freezer will melt - so that is a ready food supply is there - until it spoils and gets thrown out. But I think our plans will be to stay tbrough the storm, and then leave for the SSB.
This is just one of the joys of living along a coastal area. But each region has its own problems. At least it isn't ice and snow - normally.
Peace.

Amazing.
I never thought I would say that yesterday I sat on a $250 pillow - and it was on sale!!!
Son and his band got a gig at a very upscale furniture store in a very upscale part of Swampland. They handle the very popular Texan rustic furniture. You know, leather and old barn wood kind of stuff. The difference is that they have BIG price tags on said furniture. One leather sofa was $12,000.
The stuff is comfortable. These days I really eye the chairs I am going to sit in. If they allow the butt to go lower than the knees, they are "capture" chairs. They will have captured me. When we went to the movies on Sunday, we went to one of those new food, drink, and movie places. They have low chairs and higher chairs. I thought the low chair would be ok. Not so much!!
But the chairs in this store were wonderful. If: 1. I didn't have to completely redecorate my entire house because that is not my present style, and 2. The chairs weren't $2500 on sale, I would buy one in a heart beat. They were soft and cozy while being supportive. But I am not going to spend $100,000 on my den.
Son and band did a very nice job of entertaining. It was a fun outing. The store was providing some kind of bbq sandwiches, beer, wine, and margaritas. And I did find something that G assures me I could get and it not be stolen. They had a metal welcome sign that was about 2x3 feet. It would be so cute on the side of the house at the SSB. He has a good point. We lock the gap over the cattle guard. If they are going to steal that sign, they will be in the house as well. They would have to go to a lot of trouble to get to the house. They will certainly make it worthwhile. Not just a $113 piece of metal signage!
So I told daughter I wanted that sign for my birthday. I could go back to get it, but they are always wanting to know what we want for various present giving days. Thought I would give her an idea.
Peace.

Sleep deprived
For some reason, sleep is eluding me - except for those hours after 6:15 a.m when G's alarm goes off. For several months, I have been reading before I go to sleep. Recently I fall asleep while reading, and this means dropping the book. So I assume I am sleepy, so I turn off the light and prepare to go back to sleep.
Sleep doesn't happen. It is almost as soon as the light goes off, my eyes open - wide. I have always had a problem falling asleep. When it gets dark, my mind races. That got better for a while, but it is back with a vengeance again.
When I have tossed and turned for a while, I'll turn the light back on and read some more with the same results. My eyes close, I fall asleep. So I turn the light off again. This usually goes on until well after midnight (bedtime is 10:45).
I am usually sleeping well by 6. Then the alarm goes off, and I get up. I will lay on the couch "watching" the news. When G leaves I will sometimes fall back to sleep for about an hour.
I just wish I could sleep when I am supposed to. I am so tired of tossing and turning. I know it is said you shouldn't read before bed. It has been relaxing me. I really think the new a/c has more to do with it all than anything else. With the old one, you could hang meat in the bedroom because you were trying to cool the rest of the house. The new one is better balanced and seems to run less - a lot less. So I am used to a cold bedroom and now is is cool. So I have set the thermostat to be cooler between 10 p.m and 6 a.m. It was that way last night - and I slept better. There is hope.
May your problems be no bigger than mine. If the a/c temperature is as bad as our problems get we are really blessed!
Peace.

Sunday Potpourri
It is unusual that I am posting on Sunday, but here I am all alone - at least right now.
G and the guys are at the SSB. They have unloaded the large table my dad made years and years ago that was at the lake. Daughter got a picture from Son in Law's phone. She said it looks good. It makes sense to have that table there. It will seat 8, and when everyone is there, we need something that large. In a few years, we will still need a kid's table though. Right now there are 4 grandchildren, but I know that number will increase. Plus, our house is usually the gathering place if the extended family gets together - but that seems to be happening less and less since Father in law's death.
G just called and said they will be bringing the "large chest" back here. I gave exact directions that if it was damaged too badly by the vandals, leave it. Well . . . It looks like it is. It is not where I wanted it. The other one is not where I wanted it. Men!! Well I can change it June 19 weekend. I need to paint those chests that are there. They don't go with the colors in the house - at all. One of the chests is an antique cedar chest that is painted "cheokee red" which is in fact a dark pink/rose. Does. Not. Fit. In.
Enough of all that. Lady Bug had been promised Build A B*ar today, but since I said that I don't think I could walk that much we are going to a thrift shop that has great new (from model homes) furniture, lunch and a movie. Of course, BAB is on tap for tomorrow.
At least I will be getting out of the house. I have lots to do here. I need to complete the inner and outer purse that I am doing. I want to have that for the July craft show along with other outer purses. I will post pictures when I have finished. I also want to make baby and toddler hats. They are supposed to sell like hotcakes. The only problem with these projects is it still takes time to embroidery them.
Happy Sunday.
Peace

Nappy time it is!
I have just returned from one of those "you're in town" command performances. Lady Bug was in her second swim team event. I was informed she would be crushed if Grandma didn't come to at least one event. I went and stayed for four. That little girl is actually incredible. This is her first year, and she is really good. She improved her time on three of the events, and actually participated in one where she didn't know the stroke. Not only was she not disqualified, she placed third.
I really should have gone to Son's vocal recital. But I think he will understand. At least I hope.
G and Son in law and friend went to the lake house to remove some of the furniture before we put it on the market. He called Daughter and said the way the vandals tore up the place made him want to cry. Yep, me too. I am really having to distance myself from that house. My parents put so much of themselves in it. It was just a shell, and they completed it.
I feel like a failure in keeping the "estate." First, the funeral home really wrecked Daddy's funeral, and now I have let the vandals ruin that house. I just feel like I can't really do anything right.
Hope your holiday is a good one.
Peace.
I really should have gone to Son's vocal recital. But I think he will understand. At least I hope.
G and Son in law and friend went to the lake house to remove some of the furniture before we put it on the market. HAL, part 2
I hate hackers! I know this is not an unusual statement because who in the world likes them with the exception of other hackers. If the world were free of these horrible people, we wouldn't have to load our computers with hundreds (ok, mild exaggeration here) of programs to keep them from infecting and invading out computers.
What, you may ask, is causing this tirade? It is simple, my friends. When I boot my computer, it is because I want to do some work. I want to do it immediately. But all too often, there is no way because said computer(s) are having a moment. They are in control, and you can't get in. Why are they in control? It is because they are automatically downloading updates to said programs and/or they are scanning the computer.
I really thought my computer(s) could do more than two things at one time, but apparently this is not the case. This morning I wanted to turn the computer on, log on to the internet, do my things, and then go on with my other business. That was not in Gertie's plan. She wanted to do a virus scan - which is a noble thing to do. I know it must be done, but immediately upon booting?? Not only that, but apparently there was an update on the firewall, so off she went.
I know what you're thinking. I should have someone run a real check and find all the hidden bugs that these programs miss. You are absolutely correct. I know I can't do it, but the local computer guru place will keep the computer for several days. Not. What. I. Want.
I guess this particular HAL and I will just have to learn to coexist. But I don't have to like it.
Peace.

What a morning
I had the distinct priviledge of beginning my morning with a trip to the dentist. It was my usual (three month interval) cleaning. I enjoy my hygenist. She is funny and we get along well. But, I mean, really - the dentist. You have to understand that I have a mouth full of crowns. I think there are about 10 teeth that are my own. The remainder came at great cost to me.
One of those that is still the natural tooth has a crack. It was there three months ago, and it hasn't gone away. Amazing. I accuse my dentist (who we have been seeing for almost 30 years) of wanting to take a trip somewhere by crowning these teeth.
My teeth have never been strong. Then when I was 12 I had braces applied. My orthodontist's name, and I am not kidding, was Dr Pulliam, and pull 'em he did! Those braces did nothing to strengthen my teeth. Those were real torture devices. The good ol' doc didn't believe in wax or anything when there were wires poking into the inside lips. I still have scars from them.
When I first began going to this present dentist, he wanted to crown my front teeth since they had porcelain fillings. No, no, no, no. Then the one where the nerve died when I was 16 finally became so brittle that it broke off, I had to have it crowned. I really was afraid that time. There was nothing sticking up from the gum line. I had an implant before they became common for tooth loss.
Three years ago, when I had several crowns nicely in place, he talked me into doing all the front teeth. I could have bought a small car, but we did it. He and I spent the day together that day. I had six crowns put in.
But that is done, and I'll admit the results are great. They look really nice - much better than my old real ones. But as for the one that is cracked now - my opinion is we wait. Emergency crown placement is so much more fun. After all I need some excitement in my life!
Peace.

HAL is taking over
Yes, I really believe HAL, from the movie "2001" is taking over my life - and I'm losing!
The new, much ballyhooed a/c system is (gasp) computer controlled. I read the instruction booklet. I go to set the temperature. I still get a "hold until X:XX (time). I try to reset it to a cooler temperature, and it only holds for x amount of time. I am supposed to be able to program "events" in to it. What events?? There are no events around here. We get up, G leaves, I "do" my computer stuff, I eat lunch, and so on. I just need the thing to keep a temperature.
I made the mistake of allowing the temperature setting to be a little higher last night. It sure was! There was no getting up in the middle of the night and bumping the thermostat any more. You have to reprogram it.
I think it will be great in the winter when I want the heat LOW at night, then let it warm up when G gets up. I can't believe he is so cold natured. I think he really needs to live on the equator. The man wears long sleeves all year long. I'm sure glad he doesn't want to retire. I think we would kill each other within a week.
My next problem with computers came this morning. I have had to be sure that F*irfox is not my default browser. If I do, when it gets its panties in a ruffle, I would be dead in the water. The problem with going back to E*plorer is that my bookmarks do not come along. So my browsing is limiited. I was in the middle of reading blogs when the F got in a snit. I could go to E to check the business email and so on, but I have to wait for F to settle down to finish my reading.
I'm fighting these computers - and they are winning! What a bummer.
To add insult to injury, I need to call the alarm people. When we came in Monday, G, with his infinitely poor memory, messed up the keypad I think. It is flashing numbers that I don't understand and is not ready to arm. I'm afraid to try to do anything with it. I don't want it going off. That is not a pleasant situation.
So I am going to try the other browser, then call the alarm people. Wish me well! I wonder if the computers cam tie me up in wires and chips??
Peace.

Woo Hoo!!
The guys are here to finish the a/c! Of course, I was told that I would be called when they were on their way. Guess what. Yep, that was too easy. No call.
Daughter in law and Wiggle Worm were here visiting. She came to pick up some music for Brian for Saturday. He is participating in a vocal recital. Anyway, we were having a great visit, when a knock on the door . . .
Simone came unwound. She had no collar on. She barked. It startled WW, and he spit up while lying on my couch. It was just so much fun. But they are here. They are working. They will be out of my house - some day! And we will be cool while saving energy (I hope).
Peace again today.

Home again
We are home again. It was an interesting weekend in that we had to bring back furniture that broke. The first thing that fell apart when I touched it was a lamp. I was going to adjust it, and it came apart. I know how to fix lamps, but this one didn't give me enough space on the screw part to reconnect it. The lamp was one bought at one of the assistance ministries around, so I wasn't too upset. It served its purpose for six years.
The second was my chair! Now these chairs weren't exactly the top of the line pieces of furniture at the get go. They were the little inexpensive $99 fake leather swivel rockers. In the last few months, the plastic was separating from the backing. I was constantly doctoring the arm padding with the glue bottle. Of course, all that did was make it uncomfortable. I have been thinking about replacing them for several months, but I really hate to spend $300 + on a new chair. I also don't want to haul said new chairs from Swampland to the SSB. I just have not been able to figure out where I would buy new ones. Well, now I have an idea. I am going to check the thrift shops in the area.
We brought home the pieces of those things. Today is heavy trash pickup here, so we put them at the curb. When G went out this morning, they were gone. I know the lamp can be fixed - if you have the patience. The chair - I'm not so sure. Daughter had a chair like that one about three years ago. It didn't last long. I know what broke, and I really don't think it is worth fixing - especially with the plastic coming off.
As for our a/c update. They sent the good technician out Thursday evening. I called on Thursday only to be told they would call back. That didn't happen, so I called again. When I finally talked to James and told him we had no a/c, he set up a technician to come out. The first guy had no idea, but the second, who has been here twice before and is good, fixed the unit. We were cool Thursday night. In fact with about 1/3 of the duct work still out, it is doing a beautiful job of cooling the house. Of course, the weather has moderated - again. It is only about 70 outside right now.
James had called before we got home. I returned his call. They probably won't be able to complete the job (estimated to be a half day) until Friday. It seems to me that it would be better to not start a job if there are others hanging. We didn't have to have it done immediately. We weren't without cooling. Oh well. We'll see.
Peace.

Day four and counting
The guys left last night at 7PM. I had hopes that they were fnished. Nope. Most of the duct work is not connected. They said that it is really tight getting to the duct work. I am well aware of that. It had been pushed aside since we took in the attic. But the salesman is the one who drew up the plans - talk to him. Yep, I'm getting a little bitter right about now.
They had the downstairs unit running when they left. But, as the night before, it quit. It turned red and said there were too many amps to the compressor. So that means the little unit upstairs is still trying to cool this entire house. It was meant for about 1200 square feet. We have more than that. I can see it will fail before too much longer.
They said they would "probably" be back this morning. Well morning is about gone, as it is 11:29 AM Swampland time. I called them at 10:30. They were going to call back. Tick, tick, tick . . .
My mood right now is not a pleasant one. I have finally started my washing. That is another heat source in the house. I need to go to the store since we are/were going to the SSB tomorrow morning. But here I sit - waiting.
I wish I could find some humor in this mess. It escapes me. My house is hot, my duct work is missing, the fancy-dancy compressor won't, and the little one is probably going to roll over and die. Oh, by the way, when I checked it's thermostat last night, it was set on 40!!!! The heat wave continues, and the blasted weather people keep saying - just a couple of more days and then a front which will significantly cool things off. I think I need to turn the news off!
Oh well - such are the joys of living in Swampland and deciding to be proactive and replace an old unit before it quits in August.
Peace.

Day Three
Yes - we are entering day three of the air conditioner make-over. And day three of an "unusual heat wave." Why should that even begin to surprise me?? Stupid me. We could have done this in February, our coldest month. We would have had a heat wave then. Temperatures would have soared into the 90's. The record books would have new records to report.
Monday, I was smug about the whole thing. It remained really cool in the main living area. The bedrooms were hot, but then they had been closed off. You see, they are a mess, and I was embarrassed by the mess. I didn't realize that they had done nothing to the little upstairs unit except set the thermostat to 70! It was cooling its little heart out.
Monday night I managed to cool the bedroom with the usual fan and an added box fan to try to bring in the cool air falling from the upstairs (remember - I told you about that).
I got up yesterday with the house still fairly cool. They worked like little beavers all day. About 6:30, they announced they were leaving. Those were the words I was dreading. They would be back today.
Well, alrighty then. Monday night wasn't too bad. I spent the day right here in my breakfast room turned office with a fan blowing on me. We'll survive.
Except I had figured I better actually cook. Spaghetti. Not one burner but two! Well, that's one of the reasons I had the vent hood changed to a Tim Allen special. Remember his show, "Tool Time?" I wanted/needed one that would pull out smoke and hot air. My cook top is in a sort of island. We have a grill in that cook top. Grill + food = SMOKE! So as I was simmering the sauce, and then boiling the pasta, that sucker was pulling out air at full force.
When I went to the refrigerator I realized that the vent from the upstairs unit that comes into the kitchen had been dismantled. NO. Air. Coming. Into. Kitchen.
Shortly after the guys said they were leaving, another, different guy came in. He said he was going to try something. That something was to try to get the new unit to provide a little air. They have installed a fancy dancy new thermostat (that I wonder if I will ever figure out - no G will never figure it out, bless his little non-mechanical heart). It had been flashing red. I got the idea that something must be wrong.
After he tinkered, the thermostat turned green. I was so excited! I ran out (this time not encountering an alarm salesman) to look at the new, huge unit, and admire it as it compressed whatever it compresses to cool my house. As I rounded the corner, I heard the upstairs unit, but thought the new one ran so quietly. Yes, it was quiet; it wasn't running.
I returned to the house and the thermostat was red again. Our fate was sealed. Still, this was nothing compared to post-Ike. The warmest it has gotten in the house is 80.5. That wasn't too bad.
G went upstairs to check on the little unit. They had dismantled all its vents with the exception of the bedroom that is opposite the stairs (!?!?!). It was set to 68. He opened the access door and the attic was really cool. Vents were just there - no connection. So he (gasp) left the attic access door open. I was imagining all the little varmints that might be slipping into my craft room.
To bring this to a close - we did get through the night. They are here again. There is a lot of banging and thumping. The new unit will be addressed. I am sure (hopeful) things will be all humming properly tonight!
Peace.

Thirteen hours and then . . .
Yesterday was one of those days. It was like one we had about eight years ago. We endured workmen in our house for about thirteen hours.
Yesterday was the scheduled day for the a/c replacement. The guys arrived about 8:30 AM. They worked, hammered, banged, and removed duct work until about 6PM. I was pleasantly surprised with the ambient temperature in the house. Last week, we managed to have temperatures in the 80's. This week . . . low 90's - of course.
Last evening when I went to the refrigerator to get the salad fixings, I was almost afraid that the freezer door had been left open. It was really cool there, in fact the tile under my feet was cold! It was then G informed me that the upstairs A/C was running. In fact it was set on 70. No wonder the living area downstairs was fairly comfortable. I looked at the thermometer. It registered 79. It was really no hotter than when the downstairs unit was running. No wonder we needed a new one. The upstairs unit has a vent into the kitchen. That little vent was keeping this area cool.
When I got ready for bed, I could tell the downstairs unit was off. The bedroom, which got the lion's share of air from the old unit and thus comfortable, was an oven! The stairs land right outside the door, so I got a box fan to bring the falling cool air into the bedroom. It was passable last night - until Princess Simone decided that she had to take a stroll around the backyard at 3:30. That was really ok, because her day yesterday was completely turned upside down.
We were going to go outside after the a/c guys left to admire the new (huge) outside unit. I opened the door, and there was a guy standing right there getting ready to either knock or ring the bell - don't know which. Turns out, he was representing another alarm company. They would give us a new keypad, basically update our ancient alarm equipment and give us a fire sensor. The equipment was free, the installation was $99, and it would be $1 more than we pay to the big B company. So we had people in the house until 8:45 last night.
This reminded us both of the time we changed cable to digital. The technician was trying to run the cable where it ran before. That was a tricky task because after the first cable, we enlarged the house by taking in the attic to make two bedrooms, a bath, and a sitting area. The cable was not accessible anymore. He was pulling the new with the old. That is until, while trying to enlarge the hole through which is passed, he cut the old cable with his drill.
We ended up with at least two supervisors and the original technician tromping around. The weather decided to change. It began to rain. Not a light soaking rain. No, this was a pounding rain. Water everywhere. My son was still living with us. He was going to his room upstairs when he asked my why the hall carpet was wet.
My first response was to look up at the ceiling. That was really stupid because it couldn't be coming from there. It was worse. The hot water supply line to the downstairs sink had ruptured. There was hot water everywhere.
So now we get to add a plumber to the mix. He comes in, shuts off the water, and repairs the line. G, in the meantime, called our insurer. They send a reclamation company out. Now we have the technician, two supervisors from the cable company, fortunately the plumber left, and two guys from the reclamation company trooping around the house which now has wet carpeting in a main passageway.
The reclamation company pulls back the carpet and sets up their huge fans to speed drying. It was pure chaos around here. And as well as I remember it was about the same time of year. Oh, my. Pray for us. I think we need it. The a/c guys are back. I just hope one doesn't come through the ceiling while replacing the duct work.
Peace.

Peace.

We survived
Yesterday was not only Mother's Day, but literally D day - Dedication Day. We survived!
We got to the church at the appointed hour to get seats - 11 AM. I called Son's cell - no answer. So I tried DIL's cell. She answered. They had not left their house yet. It was agreed upon that we would meet outside the church when they got there. About 15 minutes later - they were there. We went into the church.
I can honestly say that I felt that we were entering a movie theater. In the middle of (what in my church) is the narthex was a big "information center." To my left was the snack bar. It did have a name something like (church's name) cafe. The whole area was about the size of the lobby of a mega movie theater. People were EVERYWHERE!
We went into the church. The lights were dimmed and the canned music was blaring. People were milling about. At the ends of the rows and rows of chairs were little plastic buckets. At the backs of some sections of chairs were set ups of wine and bread with something in a picture frame about communion.
We sat down, and best of all I got to hold Wiggle Worm. That baby is a morning person. I do not know how he got into this family! He doesn't fit. Anyway, then the "service" began. I honestly felt like I was at a rock concert. All the cameras were sending their signals to the big screens mounted in the front of the church.
I do not mean to step on toes here. The new Lutheran church I would like to attend because of their dynamic pastor is contemporary. It has a band. It has a lead and bass guitar. It was drums. It has singers at microphones, but it is not rock. They continued through about three numbers. It was a concert.
Finally the main preacher came out in his worn jeans and untucked shirt. He said several things, and the dedication was on. There were probably ten children who were being dedicated. When it came to WW, he was clearly not happy.
G and I come from backgrounds of infant baptism. I laughed with G saying that WW was wondering where the water was for the baptism which is his heritage too!
After the dedication, they announced communion. You just were to get up and wander back to the areas where the bread and grape juice (? I don't really know) were there. Then they sat back down so they could pass out the plastic buckets to collect the offering.
Finally was the message. He was good. He quoted several Bible verses. They had a little insert i n the bulletin where you were expected to take notes and fill in blanks.
I am sure most of those people got a lot out of that service. It left me cold. I am the very first to admit that I am caught up in the way we worship. I love a liturgical service. For me, it sets the mood and prepared me to worship. The emphasis of our service is communion. Everything builds to that event.
I know Son wants us to come back to experience the main preacher. He says he is so good. He may be, but I won't be back. That church just doesn't do it for me, and that's fine - obviously the church where he was raised doesn't do it for him any more.
Peace.

Forgot to tell you
My phone will never ring if I don't leave the house - at least that's the way I feel most of the time. I can sit here for days and with the exception of Daughter calling to check on me, there is not an incoming call.
That was the case on Wednesday. I sat here awaiting (dreading) the call from the dietitian. She was supposed to call at 1 PM. That came and went. I figured she wasn't going to call. So I left because I had to get to the ATM.
I was gone about 30 minutes because when I got to the drive through ATM, they had the driveway torn up. Now, why couldn't they do that on the weekend. Naturally this outing is one of the very few where I didn't put on long slacks, a good top and my trusty wig. I looked like something the cat tried to bury. This is important because I had to go across the street to the main building. There is a walk-up ATM there.
I pulled in the parking lot. I looked around, and breathed a sigh of relief. There was no one in the immediate area. I get out of the car, and out comes one of the tellers. I could have died. Then up drives another person. I was about to crawl into one of the cracks in the concrete! I got my money and left.
When I walked into the house, naturally the answering maching was beeping its little head off! Guess who it was - right! The dietitian.
The first part of her message was to call her. The last part was she would call me next week. I did return her call. I guess I have to wait until next week.
We are having our duct work and downstairs air conditioner replaced next week. It will take at least two days, possibly three. Our forecasted weather for said period - low 90's. Of course. Just want to chase away moderate weather here in swamp land - have your a/c break or be worked on. Works every time.
Hope your weekend is a good and restful one.
Peace.

Probably controversial
I try to keep away from controversial topics here. The reason for this blog is not do have idealological arguments. I usually just want to share little life happenings, and it started for the grandchildren. Of late, I keep wondering if I want any of them to read it because of some statements I have vented about family members.
Anyway, I really need to vent about this topic. When we had schools close here due to the flu, some parents were up in arms. Now for the ones who are supposed to be at work, I can really understand. They have no other placement for school age children. A day care isn't going to take them for a week or two - even if they have space, and they don't have programs for older children in place at this time of year.
The mother that took the absolute cake for me was the one who said she wouldn't be able to feed her children. She depended on the school to do that. I know times are tough and very tight for a lot of people. Your children are supposed to be at the top of your expense list. A child doesn't eat that much. I guess she depends on the neighborhood programs in the summer too. Feeding your child is your responsibility.
(Now out comes the soap box for more)
Teaching really made me aware of how little some parents want to parent. They want to turn all the sticky stuff over to the schools. They want after school programs to be provided by the schools. In reality, many want before schools too. I honestly believe they would only like their children home for a couple of hours.
Having been trapped in middle school for most of my career and teaching 7th grade science, I was one of the cadre of the chosen to have to teach sex ed. I am a full believer that subject is an absolute necessity. I didn't mind doing it. I know too many parents are just simply not comfortable to talk about IT.
The problem is when you consider all the nationalities and religions we have in the public school. All parents wanted sex to be taught "their way." We had such a canned unit that it was really scary to teach it the way it was supposed to be taught. We did have an alternate unit for those parents who didn't want their children in class. I'm sure they learned all the subject matter on the bus on the way home, but they were given a regular health unit.
We separated boys and girls, and to show that none of us were shy about the subject matter, we would rotate between the two groups. The scary part I referred to was the dreaded anonymous question box. Remember - I am talking about 7th graders. Some of the questions were good. Others were put in to see what the reaction would be as well as the answer. Now, those questions very well might have covered some of the material that was purposely left out of the curriculum.
In reality, I think all questions should have been answered. We have entirely too many teen mothers here. What we are doing isn't working. But . . . We had to watch our mouths because if something got home to a parent that they didn't approve - well you can finish that thought.
Back to my original rant. I don't want to see children go hungry, do home to empty houses that could tempt them to do who knows what, or be poorly educated. It isn't the child's fault. But depending on the school for the nourishment of your children!!! I think it is time for today's parents to step up to the plate and take responsibility for that child. The schools cannot and should not be everything to everybody.
Peace.

Frustration!
OK, this proves it - I am not a positive person. In fact right now I am positive I am not a postive person!
This morning has been one of complete frustration. Everything I have tried to do has ended in hair pulling frustration!
The first thing I tried was to send Mother in Law flowers for Mother's Day. I have done it before, and there was not a problem. Today - different story. Our insurance company is huge. They do lots of things. One is having a special with one of the floral delivery companies. I logged on to their site to get to the flower part. I needed the user name and password. I. Didn't. Have. Them. I emailed G. It took him over an hour to send it to me. So I went about other tasks while on line that I will go into later. I even tried to set up my own used name and password. Nope - I was informed I already had one. There was no escape information for those of us who would have forgotten that information. Out of luck.
Finally he emailed me back, and I went back to the site. I happily filled out the form, having retrieved the address that he had to get from his brother last night - omitting to tell me where he had written it. Then I got to the reciepient's phone number. Did. Not. Have. It! At this point, I was remembering all the hateful things this woman has done to me and considering to just "forget" to do this task. I was not about to send another email, so I called to get that information. Finally that was done. A perfect ending to a frustrating morning - almost.
While waiting for the email, I went about my merry time reading emails (from 4 accounts) and the blogs I read in the morning. That went well. Until I got to the email where one of the embroidery magazines posted that their 50 free designs were available. OK!! My new addiction. Free embroidery designs.
My first attempt was with Firefox. I got dumped twice. Desire to throw the computer onto the floor with force! So I went to Explorer. I keep that as my primary because for some reason, Firefox will not allow me to edit our web site. The downloads there were going to take me years.
So I went back to Firefox. At least it worked fairly well this time. I now have 50 new designs - to add to the thousands I have already found. I really needed them, but they were free!! Free!! The magic word.
Then I decided to come here to post (read vent). I was happily informed that Firefox was already running so tough. You can't access it. It is hidden. This happens to me - a lot. So I went to the search function. I was directed to Explorer. I didn't want Explorer, but here I am.
So here it is - after 11AM. I planned to be out of the house now. I need to hit the ATM for money for tomorrow's sewing club meeting. I guess I will have to wait because it is time to pay the piper. (This was going to be today's topic). The nutritionist is calling today. She will want to know how many pounds I'm down. Gasp! Fortunately, with my varying weight, I can honestly tell her two pounds. Don't know where it went over night, but I can rest assured it will come home tomorrow - probably bringing a party of friends! Anyway . . .
Peace.

Positive outlook?
I really thought that for the most part I did have a positive outlook. I mean, after breast cancer, I just know am going to beat it. That's pretty positive thinking. But yesterday made me wonder about just how positively I do think.
We spent the weekend at the SSB. Daughter and Son in law were going to the Alamo City so she could go to her company'd section meeting. Lady Bug has already missed several days of school, so Daughter didn't want her to miss two more days so she could go with them. We were to pick Lady Bug up from the afternoon bus to stay with us.
The trip from the SSB is at least five hours minimun, regardless of which way you go. G wanted to stop by the lake house to try to board it up. I went in this time, and that is for another time. It was bad.
Back to the subject at hand. I spent the entire trip home worring about getting home to meet the bus. We decided we would leave the SSB by 9AM. That meant not vacuuming and dusting. It also meant washing dishes by hand. The dishwasher takes hours it seems - especially when we are in a hurry.
So the SSB is a mess. We piled into the troop carrier, and we were off. I kept expecting a serious accident or a break down that would mean that we wouldn't get home at all yesterday. I just knew something was going to happen.
We got to our house at 3PM. I had an hour and 20 minutes! Daughter gave her neighbor a heads up to look for Lady Bug in case we were late. That was really great. I got to know her better. We have a lot in common! She is a great lady. I really want to get to know her even better.
So we had Lady Bug all night. She slept with me. I didn't sleep. She is impossible to sleep with. She normally sleeps in a twin bed. Give her a king and she takes the entire thing too.
Oh well, I have the rest of the day to rest. I pick her up again today, and she will be here until about 9 this evening. I am so lucky. SHe is such a great kid!
Peace

It never rains but . . .
My new back door is here and being installed as I write! Yea! I am so excited. So what's the downside? It decided to rain. Probably only about .02 of an inch, but enough to make the patio wet with a puddle close to where the installer has to work - often with an electric saw. Could be exciting.
He said he gets to install another door later this afternoon. I'll bet it rains then too!!
On top of all else, who is here but the yard people. I can't believe it! Wet grass and lawnmowers. I wonder if they will try the blowers? I need to get the video camera out. That would make the funny video clip.
Simone was still "out" in the house when the installer got here. She was terrified when the hammering began. Not only was there loud noises, but , gasp, he raised his arm. I'll bet whoever had her before beat the wowie out of her. But when you rescue a dog, you never know what has happened to them.
Well, at least I can get out of the house later. He came on time, instead of at the later time given. That seldom happens.
Yesterday I had to run to choose tile for the front porch. I thought Vernon was coming to rebuild the fence and put in my step in on the front porch. As it is, the other job gave him the go-ahead for Friday and Monday. That's ok - at least I picked out the tile, and it is ready to go. It is really pretty - a charcoal slate type of tile. I can't wait. But knowing Vernon, I'll have to.
Wash your hands!
Peace.

Almost boring
After the excitement, both good and bad, around here for the last few days, I almost feel a let down today. There is no pending disaster. There is no elevaing good news. It is just a normal day. Simone is ok and the sun is shining beautifully.
I know I have to get to the grocery store today. I really don't want to go - on so many levels! Not only do I hurt walking the isles, but, well the elephant, or in reality the pig, in the room makes me not want to go. I guess I am being reactive, but this flu thing has me a bit shaken.
When they first began talking about it, I was whisked back to the days in the early 70's of teaching biology. Texas had just adopted a new book, and in it was a section about the impending swine flu possible epidemic. I had a student that I got to make posters from the pictures in that section, so every year when I would get ready to put up bulletin boards I would remember not only that student but the worry that was around then. I would laugh a bit to myself about how we were so worried then. Now it is reality.
Don't get me wrong. I am not completely petrified of this thing - but the news today of the toddler who died here catch my attention. The child came from Matamorous, Mexico, and was transferred from a Brownsville hospital to a hospital here. But this flu is particularly bad for the young and the old. Well - I'm old!! Enough of that.
Tomorrow things pick up again. My long awaited new back door will be installed. I am pretty excited about that. It is really nice. It should be. I cannot believe how much that baby cost me. But it was the one I wanted. We will have the contractors from H*me D*pot install it. That means they will completely rebuild the door frame and threshold. They did out front door, and it is wonderful. It fits so beautifully and is so energy efficient.
We will be headed out to the SSB this weekend. One of the things we will do it mount the flag pole on the house so we can fly the flag I ordered for G's birthday. It is his great grandfather's brand. It looks something like this:
)-(
1854
He is so excited (as excited as he ever gets) about having that brand flying over that property again. It is really kind of neat.
Well I need to get back to the everyday things around here -whatever they are - and listen to the news bite about the additional cases of flu here in Texas. Great!
Peace.
Extremes
Texas weather, like other places I am learning, is never predictable. Last night we had a toad strangler that stopped about 10PM. I heard the weatherman say that we would still be getting some showers from the Gulf, but G didn't hear that.
About 3AM I was awakened by the claps of thunder. I could hear the rain hitting the roof above the sound of the fan. Of course, Simone had left her kennel and was plastered next to the bed. I would doze off and be shaken awake by the thunder again. Then the power began to blink off and on. I was absolutely sure we would be without electricity in just a matter of time. I was pleasantly surprised when it remained on.
About 4 AM I decided I would check the rain recorded on the electronic rain gauge. That is an absolute necessity in the Burbs of Swampland! We had four additional inches. I thought about getting up to check the street, but I was just too lazy to do that. If Simone jumper into the bed with me, I would be pretty sure we had water in the house.
When we moved here 33+ years ago, flooding was never a problem. We could get these rains and the worst thing that would happen is the street up in front of Poe's house would become impassible, The lady on the corner who has lived here for 50+ years - even before our area was built into houses, said that there was a natural draw there. The center of that draw goes right to his front door.
Now, after we pumped a lot of water from the ground here and we are now surrounded by development, parts of our little city flood - with each heavy rain. They have been working diligently on retaining ponds to try to keep the flooding from happening. To me they are not of real use. When we get one of these monsoons that drops 10 inches (and this one did in 12 hours) those are going to get full, and then THEY will overflow.
G got up once to check on the street. It was over the curb and into the grass. Our stupid neighbor still had his little truck parked in its usual place in front of the house. I wonder if he got water in it? You would think that after his stepdaughter had a wheel stolen from her car they would park in the driveway which has plenty of room. They seem to only allow one car in the drive - but I'm off subject.
I wonder how many homes in our city got water in them. The first thing I heard on the news was that the bayou that cuts through the middle of our city was out of its banks. G went that way to work. He said it was barricaded, and the street that runs along it was still closed. I think we took this rain fairly well. I really think the flooding, if there was any, was minimal. I hope so.
It is now 9 and all the news stations are still covering the flooding. It is bad. It is so weird. A month ago, we were so far behind in rainfall. I think we are ahead now.
This school year has been a tough one for the schools. They had been in session for about a week when we experienced Ike. They have been making up some of those missed instructional days. The districts around here canceled school for today. I know they did it because the buses couldn't roll. But today is the beginning day of the mandated state testing. They are now going to have to make that up.
So hopefully we don't get any more rain. They say we got 7 inches - I recorded only 4. Regardless - no more please!
Peace.

Happy news!
Simone does not have a tumor. Shre has some thickening in her duodenum. No one knows why. That may be the problem. It is still unknown. We are going to worm her and administer an antibiotic. We have a treatment plan in place after tat too. We'll see what happens. It is just such good news. We are all so relieved.
The a/c guy came. If we go with a really good unit/duct work, we are probably be looking at $20,000. We still haven't talked about what we want to do yet. That's a lot of money. As it is, I really believe we are pouring a lot of money down a rat hole because I'm sure our 35 year old vents are leaking air like a sieve, and the unit is just not an efficient one. Don't know what we are going to do.
Daughter in law asked if I would make a bib for Wiggle Worm's dedication. No problem. It is done - along with a burp cloth.
So has been my day. I hope yours was as good.
Peace.

Tidbits from the samp
The family got together to go out to a Cajun restaurant to celebrate G's birthday (that was last Thursday). It was really good, but this particular place is expensive. Well - it's only once a year.
Wiggle Worm was really a good baby tonight. He took an afternoon nap, so all was good in his world. The other three were really good too. Lady Bug was exhausted. She partied all weekend. She had two birthday parties to attend - one being a sleep over. What a misnomer!
Tomorrow we take Simone to have her ultrasound. She is off food until we get her back home. She is acting so normal right now. I keep praying that she is not as seriously ill as I am afraid she is. She may only have weeks. I just hope she doesn't have the splenic tumor.
We are having the a/c guy tomorrow. I wanted to get a whole house generator. I'm tired of the electrical service here. It can go out with just thunderstorms to say nothing of hurricanes. But we need to see what the a/c will cost. On the news this morning, they were giving stats on things people could live without. I was amazed that that many people felt a/c was not essential. They don't live here! When the temps are in the high 90's or even 100's and the humidity is right there with is - it is an absolute essential. Those conditions can go on for weeks on end.
Hope your weekend was good. I'll catch you later.
Peace.

Unknown
I know. This is yet another post about a dog. Those of you that have close dog companions will understand. Those of you who are not as fortunate will not understand.
Simone had another relatively bad night last night. These "spells" used to come about every six months or so. When she would be checked, there was nothing remarkable that would cause her problems. This time, the "spells" are coming about every other day.
She was pretty much on her own yesterday since the painters were in the house all day. She would seem just fine, then she would start "licking air." That would happen over and over. When she went out for her last potty break, she was fine. She did her laps around the yard,
When she came in, it was back to the air licking. That went on from 10PM to 1AM. It was then, and I guess this speaks volumes for my housekeeping, she vomited up 2 socks and a knee high. I couldn't believe it. She was in the bedroom, and I thought I had scoured it looking for anything she would try to ingest. But there it was. Visible evidence.
I took her to the vet today. We decided on the x-rays this time. The vet and I neither expected anything. But we were wrong. She has a large mass that is distenting her abdomen. It is very possibly a splenic tumor.
So I went on-line to google splenic tumors. The findings were not good. If that is what she has, and it is malignant, which most are, her days are limited. It is a fast growing cancer that begins in the blood vessels, so it spreads - fast.
She is to go back in Monday morning. This young vet doesn't do ultrasounds well. She tried, but couldn't get a good picture. It is surely there on x-rays though. So Simone's original doctor will be there to do the procedure.
Then we go from there.
She saw me through my cancer. I guess I'll be here for her as long as she needs me.

MIracles!
I can't believe it. It is 11 AM our time and so many things have been done. If I had not been talking and then reading blogs and emails, I would have posted this before now.
Before 8AM Ghost #2, otherwise known as the electrician, called. He was sending his helper over to change out the security light. Wow. I hurried to dress. He was here about 8:30. Light is replaced and I am assured it is working.
The lawn guys were here at 8:45. That's taken care of. Don't have to worry about that.
Ghost #1 was here at the appointed hour of 9:30. I gave him the list of things to be done. His guys have the wall paper down in the breakfast room. That is a feat that I didn't think could be accomplished. The sheet rock is even in tact. After 33 years, I was afraid they would be one piece.
I gave him the laundry list of things to be done. I don't know how much I'll be able to afford since we will be getting a quote on Monday for new duct work, a/c unit, and heater for the downstairs. We also have to replace the 20+ year old pool filter - $3000 worth.
We seem to be bleeding money these days.
Along that line, I have come to accept selling the lake property. I just have to put my feelings about the place way out of my mind. That place IS my dad. I know it will be torn down. But with the things that need to be done around here, we could use the money. Besides, no one has been to the place in at least 3 years. We have to move on.
I am excited about the change in my kitchen/breakfast however. I told daughter the color, and she didn't like it. Oh well!
Peace.

Well . . .
I don't know if I may have gotten a terrible virus, worm, or other unwanted thing on the laptop - my workhorse, or what. I cannot access the internet on it. Even here on old Della, my main email source says it is having difficulties. I'm not sure where the problem is. Plus I HATE working here in the office. I haven't worked in here since I got Gertie.
I guess that's just the way the day is going. The contractor is still an unknown deal. I don't know he is is going to show tomorrow or not. I know him and all. He did a wonderful job on daughter's kitchen remodel. I don't know if it is because the woman across the street was going to use him and didn't. He thinks she is a loon. We are not all loons on this street!! Honest.
I need to call the electrician - again. He tried to come out around Easter - when we were gone/ The last time he was going to come, we had the monsoon. So I guess I'll call - again - since it might be that I am caught here for the next two days.
I love living a planned life - at least I think I would if I knew what one was!
Peace.

The contractor is coming!!
No, wait. Probably not. This has been a saga going on since November. Daughter was going to have the contractor (since become good friend) come to take down my 35 year old wall paper in the breakfast room, texture and paint it. That was to be a Christmas present. I was set to do it, but much water has passed under the bridge since I first considered that job. In fact, I have the rolls of wallpaper sitting in my bedroom that I was going to use.
Well, wallpaper has gone out of vogue around these parts, so I decided I would paint. With my shoulders that really isn't an option, and the knees will scream loudly after an insult like that. This kills me because I have always been one to pull out the rollers, et al and go to it.
Anyway, V has always had an excuse - other jobs - for not getting here. Well, the economic downturn has caused his business to slow. So - I thought he would be here on Thursday and Friday. Little does he know, but my job for him has grown. We have some boards that need to be replaced around the house, I would like to have pull out drawers installed in my pantry (especially) and cabinets. I just can't get on the floor anymore to get to those low shelves. I want a step put on my front porch and a tile overlay on that. G decided to have him look at the fence. It is getting really rickety. Let's just say we have some work.
But if he doesn't get here soon, there won't be any money left in the trough. We already have to have the pool filter replaced. It is only 20+ years old. I think it has run its course. Yesterday we had the air conditioners checked for the summer. Guess what! We need an entirely new system for downstairs - ac, furnace AND ductwork. My, my. Things just get better and better.
So excitement about getting the contractor has once again turned to a waiting game. I may be painting this room after all!
Peace.

Weekend update
The weekend did not go as planned. There were several reasons for that, but still . . . Things just didn't happen like I hoped.
Friday and Saturday were monsoons. We were 4 inches below normal rainfall. Not any more. We are about .15 of an inch. Needless to say, the trip to the grocery store was not in the cards. So that meant we had to go on the day I hate grocery shopping the very most -Sunday. Sunday grocery shoppers are like Sunday drivers. No place to go and all day to get there.
It is such a trial for me to go to the grocery in the first place, I want to get in and get out - fast. I am really thinking about using one of the motorized carts, but I just fight that. So I am in real pain about half way through. We have two stores of the same chain near us, but the one closest is bigger than the one I go to so I don't go there. (Follow that contorted sentence??) I swear if I could order groceries for a reasonable price to be delivered I really think I would do that. But then I think about someone else buying the produce and meat, and the idea doesn't seem as viable. And produce and meat are the majority of my purchase. Hmmm.
The kids were expected Sunday for dinner. That was not easy this time because my whole weekend routine was off. So I decided on something "easy." I found a new recipe for pulled pork with a strawberry BBQ sauce. It was far more work than I anticipated. But they liked it - even Monkey Boy who doesn't like anything I fix because I don't load it with ketchup.
Speaking of Monkey Boy, he usually has nothing to do with me. Ever since we were at the SSB, he has been my "best friend." He was so good and loving last night. I wonder what's wrong with him???
To put the icing on the cake, Simone was acting as though she was going to vomit all evening. I was late giving her the antacid pills. I gave it to her, and husband immediately fed her saying I told him to. Talk about reverse selective hearing. He was going to feed her - period. So he said I said it was OK. Not.
So we (Simone and I) enjoyed each other's company from 3-5 AM this morning as she walked around the bedroom - retching. Somehow, she discovered a sheet of paper that she immediately downed half before I knew it. I thought I would be cleaning it up at some point. You know, I swear it settled her stomach!
I am worried about her though. I tried to convince G to take her. I get the feeling he thinks he could get better results from the visit. He has nicely abdicated that responsibility. He will suggest she go tomorrow - when he is at work. Nice.
Anyway - peace.

He did what?
I just got off of the phone with daughter. I asked what she was doing. She said she was waiting for her husband to get home. I asked where he was. She replied he was coming home from a golf tournament. A what?!!!
People - our weather since 3 PM yesterday - has been stormy with heavy rains (yes Judy - toad stranglers), lightning and thunder. Who is their right mind would put their fannies out on a cow pasture carrying metal sticks? Do they want to be lightning rods?
As you can probably read between the lines, I am not a golfer. I don't see much to it. Don't give me the exercise line either. If you want exercise, get off the cart.
I asked if they played at all, and Daughter replied they managed to get 4 holes. They didn't want to lose their money. Um, I think I value my life more than a few dollars I paid to chase that little ball.
Have a good rest of the weekend. Tomorrow looks to be a better day around these parts.
Peace.

Dead Brain
Whine, whine, whine. That's my real mood today. I am not going to spend much time here with it all because I am just out of cheese to go with it. So here is a brief list of my whining.
Simone had a bad night last night. She was showing signs of being nauseated at bed time (of course). She woke at 1 and gagged until about 4. So sleep deprivation for mom.
The electrician seems to only be able to come when we are gone to replace the security light. When we went to the SSB last Friday, he called. He called again on Monday. We weren't here. He said Thursday (yesterday) or Friday (today). Didn't call yesterday, and today we are expecting a toad strangling rain with associated possible tornadoes and hail. Doubt he will be here today either.
There are good things going on around me, I just can't see them right now. My vision is blocked by this other bull.
Peace.

Wide Musings
Tuesday was a really busy day for me. I had booked two doctor's appointments in the same day. Not a fun thing to do.
The first was with the optometrist. It was time for my annual check up. Several years ago (10-15?) I was diagnosed with glaucoma. For years I religiously put drops in my eyes. And for several years, the pressures remained pretty constant. I wasn't really surprised that I got that diagnosis. My mother was also diagnosed with glaucoma.
Then the medical world advanced. It was discovered that people's eyes (mostly women I think) can have thickened corneas that mimic glaucoma. Guess what? My corneas are thickened. That little fact saves me $50 a month (thank you drug insurance for being there). But it also means I really don't worry about blindness - as much. Take the hearing if you must, but please leave my sight.
Daughter, come to find out, has the same problem. She is 35 and her eyes are worse than mine. So I believe that my mother didn't have glaucoma either. Daughter, husband and I all see the same doctor now, and we love her.
The afternoon brought the appointment in my search for a new primary physician. After being my doctor for 33 years, my other one retired. Can you believe that!!
Anyway, son in law, daughter and husband have gone to Dr A and like him. On the advice of my nurse from the insurance company, I made the well-woman (like well baby) appointment. I LOVE this new guy. You can easily talk to him. Plus he is not one of those weight gurus. He has problems with his weight too! He KNOWS what a struggle it is. In fact he shared with me that he is a heart patient (don't like that - don't want to lose him), has 5 stints, but hasn't seen his cardio doc because he has gained weight. That sounds like a normal person. I want to urge him to see his doc because, like I said, I don't want to lose him.
So my eyes are good to go - didn't even need a new script for glasses, and the new doc is great. All's right with the world.
This morning Simone had another bout of nausea. So we were off to the vet's office for a 9AM appointment. I like this practice a lot. I can always see a vet. My appointment was with a new doctor. I thought perhaps a new slant would shed some light on the problem.
Simone had blood drawn for unremarkable results - which is good, I guess. Still no answers. So bolus of fluids, $42, blood work, $169.50, pancreas test, $74, shots, $67.50, exam, $45.50, new flea treatment, $88, for a grand total of $491. The love of that dog and the pleasure she brings 99.9% of the time, priceless. I just wish we had an answer. We still don't know the why for these bouts. So far nothing serious has reared its ugly head.
Stay well!
