What I did in Mason

Sounds like the beginning of elementary school assignment that kept us all busy, doesn't it??  Anyway - it was a busy time!

Of course on Thursday, we went to Fredericksburg for food.  We also took a chair I salvaged from the ravaged lake house before we got rid of the house to be redone.  We went to the hardware store for a socket, the grocery for the rations for the week, and then ate at a divine little Italian restaurant.  It was almost closing time for them, but they were so gracious.  The food and the prices were great, but since Fredericksburg is a tourist haven - we walked about two blocks - up hill to get there.  I thought going back would be better - hah!  Of course - I wore the wrong shoes.

On Saturday we had one of the many family reunions (and we don't make all of the different branches!).  It was nice to see folks we haven't seen for a while.  My SIL and I were going to meet a friend (and neighbor) for the Home Tour.  We set 1 pm because the reunion usually breaks up right after lunch.  Not this year!  So we were running late, which is nothing for SIL.  In fact - it's how she rolls.

Anyway we met up with J and she had R with  her.  Now R is a different bird. I don't know how to take her, but that's another story.  The homes were really something, and they ranged from those that were at least 150 years old to being completely off all utility grids. Quite a range.

My problem came with R.  And I will be honest - I don't really like her at all.  Again another story completely.  She began talking about our other friend, neighbor, and, not surprising in that country, relative.  He has been diagnosed with brain cancer - terminal but is adding some time by doing chemo and radiation.  Now in the meantime, he has suffered a ruptured colon.  What a wonderful life, right?

Anyway, R has pushed herself into knowing everything there is to know at the Methodist Church there.  She was telling us that he is so weak, he doesn't want any visitors, including his children.  She was talking about how everyone wants to help, but they don't want any.

I sat as long as I could, and finally couldn't keep my tongue  in my head.  I told her I can completely understand why some people withdraw.  To which she replied that she knew.  She did that to the detriment of her health and those around her.  She just withdrew deeper and deeper.  That was it!  I told her I completely understand this person because I TOO HAD CANCER!  She shut up - a  little.

Anyway, last night we went to the "social event."  Our community is named Hilda - otherwise known here as the Wide Spot in The Road.  We go to community club there once a month, but don't go to the church - Methodist.  We are Lutheran, so we go down the road a piece.  Anyway the social event was Hilda Happy Hour.  We have been before, but it is the last Wednesday of the month, and if we go for Community Club, that is the third Friday.

Guess who was co-host.  This man and his wife.  And you know what, although it did look like someone who has been terribly ill, which he certainly has, he was not weak.  He was outgoing.  His children have been around helping in the fields and with the cattle.  This weekend, they plan to have everyone there to celebrate birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas.  What a complete liar R is.  But then it goes along with what I fear of her.  I don't think down deep they are nice people - and again, I will touch on that later.

It made me feel so good to see H and his wife.  She and I went through bad times together, and she looks good too.  He certainly is not currently at death's door as R made it sound.  And she wants the four of us to get together again?  I don't think so.

Peace.

Am I (or are we) being paranoid

First - let me say - let's give it up for Adele!!  What a talent.

OK - now to the topic at hand.  In January, we had our first Women's Group at church.  Things went along pretty well - and open - until Pastor C showed up.  Then, it all stopped, and the group left.

This time his sister, our "Minister for Community ..." came.  Now, we cannot very easily exclude her.  She is, after all, a woman.  But with this brother/sister team working, a lot of us feel that there are multiple road blocks given to any thought that might not fit their plan.

Our children's ministry, as I have noted before, is almost non-existent.  The children meet for approximately 15 minutes for their lesson.  This is during the sermon.  On our website, that is listed as a good thing.  They are able to stay in church with their parents and yada, yada, yada.  The teachers for these kiddos would love for them to be in class longer.  There are a lot of adults that would like to have a Sunday School for themselves.  Simply not available.

If you are a young person past 6th grade (13.14) there is no educational program for you at all.  There is no LYO, there is nothing.  It is stated that they have the opportunity to go to meetings all over and meet others.  Not. So. Much.  Never, Has. Happened.  This year (out of four others) is the first confirmation class.  And only because it meets at the same time as one of the preferred "small groups" that meet EVERY week meets.  So it is a cycle of 10 meetings, then another 10 meetings.  After that - you are on your own, kids.

Back to my original.  Our lay minister was there.  Things felt strained already.  We began the meeting - still looking for hopes and dreams from the women there for this group.  Everything we proposed was shot down.  I was left hanging trying to run the meeting.  She found reasons for not doing anything we suggested.

At the beginning, she said she had to leave at 1:30.  The meeting began at 12:30.  That was to include snacking, visiting, and making some decisions.  One hour wasn't going to cut it.  When that hour came, Lay-minister said to decide on one thing and pray.  Then get out.

She was successful in getting the meeting to end - somewhat.  When she left, our Education person also left. That caused others to also go.  But we didn't decide on one thing to do, nor did we pray.  I put off the prayer - I had one topic that HAD to be covered.  We wanted input on childcare for the ensuing meetings.  We had to decide that.

So Sister left.  Several others also filtered out.  Daughter was able to come in then.  Lady Bug had a basketball game, so I knew they were going to be late.  I saw them come to the door, but then walk away.  I wondered why, but we still managed to have 8 of the 11 people who were there for the meeting.  The conversation was going well.  We were really talking about the things we were interested in doing.  Far away from Sister's idea.

Later Daughter came in.  She was talking to Pastor C.  Well - guess what.  He was there because Sister had to leave.  My daughter told him we were having a women's meeting, and he should stay away until it looked like things were breaking up, then come down to get something to eat.  She has obviously developed a good relationship (friendship) with him.  She warned him before she would tell him like is was.

This situation bothers me.  I have a good relationship with Pastor C as well.  We have taken him to eat many times, we have gone to his outreach things during the day, we (and this shouldn't matter) are in his top 10 giving families.  He should know I have chosen his church over his friend's church (it was our family church until one of the big blow ups that runs people off from that church).  He should know I love our little church, and I want the best.  He really does not have to be there.  We are not planning an overthrow.  I feel really sad that this group that has all our generations in it is being monitored this way.

We want to do things like fund raising.  That is a dirty word to C.  He doesn't feel that it does any real good.  We want to get our name out there.  This is the desire of the "Top 10" as well.  We are not being radical.  He has tried his way, please let us try something.

I have the feeling that we have the positives of this group meeting the negatives and secrecy that has been prevalent with our Ministry Team.  They have turned so many off already.  My real prayer is that this group can continue to grow in fellowship and service to each other, the church, and the community.  Right now we feel we should concentrate on each other and the church.  They feel the community.

Sorry for the long rant.  Had to get my feelings out.  Out of internet for the next week.  Catch you all in a week.

Peace.

Sibling rivalry

Ah - what a deep subject for a Monday morning.  It is a subject that I have no personal knowledge of other than my own children since I was an only child.  I see it with G at times.  Whether is was his perception of his mother's actions or not, I know he will occasionally make statements that could be construed as springing from sibling rivalry.  I think that is not the case - I knew the witch for 42 years.  She didn't like any of this family.  My question is rather rhetorical I guess because of my previous statement, but does it ever end?

Daughter had not gotten out to meet the newest baby in the family.  I know she is busy, but ...  So I asked her if she would host family dinner last night since her dad wasn't feeling well and didn't want to infect six children.  She launched into such a tirade!

She had contacted DIL on Saturday asking if it would be ok to come out that afternoon to meet #6.  DIL said it really wasn't because Son had a gig at a BBQ cook off.  Family dinner was brought up, and DIL made a comment along the lines they hadn't decided what they were going to do, but she would let Daughter know Sunday morning.

About 1, Son called me to tell me his had scored a couple of briskets at the cook off, and he would bring one.  When I talked to G later, we decided that (1) it was Daughter's turn to host, and (2) we weren't.  So then I made "The Call."

What a storm I stepped into there.  She was furious with DIL and Son for waiting so long.  They had started pork already.  On and on she went.  I finally just flat told her to let me get a word in.

After a bit, she called and apologized to me.  But, you know, the damage really had been done.  I felt terrible about the situation.  I wish I had the nerve to tell her that she had been wrong for not making time to go out to see the baby.  I know her reaction was partially out of guilt with the situation.  But still.  Even her kids were taking the brunt of all this.

She is so jealous of her brother at times.  There is no reason at all.  They have always been treated equally, and if it was unequal, she usually had the better times.  Son doesn't seem to have these feelings.  He is pretty even tempered - until something really gets to him.  Even then, he blows up and it's over.

Daughter is looking closely at 40.  I can't help but wonder if there might be some peri-menopausal stuff going on there.  I don't know, but this stuff is really getting to me!

Better things to think of - our Pastor was absolutely amazed at the working of the women's group with out initial meeting.  He saw positive things happening the entire time we were together.  My co-conspirator was furious he was there.  She felt he dominated the meeting.  I told her for this first one, it was fine.  I wanted him to see that we were a good thing for the church.  If he comes in the next time, we will politely tell him to get a plate of food and leave!  So there were good things happening on Sunday too!

Peace

I really don't get it

Seriously, I am verrrrrry puzzled.  It seems that no plumber repairs leaky faucets these days.  They REPLACE them -- to the tune of several hundred dollars a pop.

Now, if the little guy who is trying to get started had called me back - he very probably would have fixed my leaky kitchen faucet.  That little baby is/was about 15 years old (my, how time flies - seems like I bought it last year), and was a very good, sturdy faucet.  It developed a leak - probably from us not turning it off properly.  It was a single handle, and we would carelessly center the handle to turn it off.  Well - it was leaking unless we really paid attention to what we were doing.

I called Rich weeks ago.  He never called me back.  So I called a big outfit.  I am angry with the plumbers I usually use - but that's another story.  Anyway - we had a leaky faucet in the back yard, and the kitchen sink.  The bill for those repairs was $1600.  Yep - you read that correctly.

The faucet in the back had been "jerry-rigged" so many times, and the pipe itself was badly rusted.  I knew there would be dollar signs with that one.  But the kitchen??  Replace the whole thing?  What happened to repairing the leak?

The same thing happened when the other company was called to repair a leak in the hall bathroom.  It was a good Moen faucet.  I KNOW there is a cartridge in them that can be replaced - and the leak stops.  Nope - the whole thing was replaced.  I thought perhaps this company would be into repairs  not replacement.  I was wrong.  Jeesh!

In other money spending - Simone had her semi-annual check up.  She is well - vaccinated freshly, but she is well.  The whole staff celebrated that.  They know us well.  Very well.  She is such a sweet dog they all love her as much as I do.  The vet said he was delighted to see her doing well.  We have fought her queasy stomach for years, so it was nice to have a well dog check up.  It still cost a bundle though.

Such an exciting life.  I need to schedule a couple more repair people.  The handle on the dishwasher broke - wonder if it will have to be replaced (the whole thing like the faucets)?  Then we have the a/c heater checks.  Don't you wish you had such an exciting life???

Oh, Ju Ju - Shadow did finally come down from the china cabinet.  It took him a couple of days to realize Angelica was really gone.  He didn't even bite me for about a week.  He's completely back to "normal" and I am ready to bring that dog back!

Technology - bah humbug!

It seems I get farther and farther behind in the technology field these days.  I have been having a real love/hate relationship with this relatively new laptop.  My son got a Mac, and I am wishing I had done the same thing, but I wanted something that would be cheap inexpensive.

I spent the day a couple of days ago fighting with an embroidery program.  It shows icons of what the design is when you open your folder(s).  That is a nice time saver.  I got the stupid idea to look for updates.  Well, you know what that meant.  The whole thing crashed.  I wasn't able to see a single icon.  No real biggie, but a definite time saver.  I do love that program.  I guess that's why I have spent $80 on it total.  You see in my tech savvy way, I deleted the main program.  So I just gave up and bought another license - along with a DISC this time!!  I know - slow on the uptake!

When I got that program re-loaded, I was getting an error message about Explorer.  I am not an Explorer user, but that stupid program was messing with me making CD's to move the embroidery files from here to the upstairs computer.  So, once again, I ventured forth.  I reloaded Office 2010.  I figured that was where the problem had to be.  I still don't know it that fixed that problem or  not, but it caused another one!

When I went to my picture file, none of the jpeg thumbnails would open.  I had to be in a photo editing program.  Well - that just wouldn't do.  So I waged war again today with that problem.  I finally fixed it.  I can see my jpegs.

But, and you knew there was a but, didn't you?  Another of the embroidery programs is acting all wonky now. It is the one that allows me to change from one type of embroidery file to another so I can use them on my machine.

And - speaking of my machine.  Yep - battle there too.  It has been squeaking - a lot.  I know it needs its yearly cleaning and check up, but I just didn't want to give it up for three days.  It has been acting a fool. I have to cut out thread nests about three times for every 1000 stitches it does.  It broke a foot (on the machine - not mine) and ruined my brand new wonderful embroidery scissors when I was trying to get rid of one of those nests.  At least I was able to complete all the fancy stuff on the photo album cover for the youngest granddaughter!  I had to take it to the old workhorse to sew it together however.  So I took the sick machine to the shop a while ago.  I was just there yesterday for club meeting, but decided I would wait until we went to the SSB to take the machine in.  Nope - got to take that drive again today!

Such is my tale of woe.  Technology -  bah!  So with all the problems I have been trying to solve - I still don't have new pics of the SSB loaded onto the computer.  When I couldn't see what I would try to upload here, what was the use?  I have embroidery projects lined up to the ceiling.  I do have dress making to do - so I CAN do that.  Isn't my life just pitiful - don't answer that.  I know the answer.  This month reminds me of just how lucky I am every day.  I really don't forget it with pink ribbons everywhere.  I will try to get those pictures posted tomorrow.  G will be gone again tomorrow and Sunday afternoon.  I should be able to get a lot done!

Peace.

Where did it go?

I had a great topic for this morning's post. When I got in here and opened the computer, I lost that idea. Does that happen to you? I am getting a bit worried. I forget too many things. For good example is my wedding ring. I know that when I put it there (obviously not where it should go) I thought to myself that it was in a strange place I wouldn't remember. Ah, I know myself too well. That ring is sitting right there in the place I knew I wouldn't remember.

I have trouble with names also. If I meet someone and they tell me their name, odds are that I won't remember it two minutes later. I seem to remember names after three or four meetings. I lay that on the fact that I would have to remember 150 names in two days. As least that's my excuse.

All too often, I can't remember what we had for dinner last night - but that's because it must have been some of the slop that I throw together and serve in a thirty minute time period. Rachel Ray has nothing on me. I have been cooking that way for 50+ years.

I once feared my memory loss. That was until our ex-pastor was talking to me. I was his organist for at least ten years. I would ask him about something that occurred when we were doing a wedding or service together. He told me that he has the same problems caused by too much anesthesia. He has had far more than I. In fact neither he nor his cardio doc can remember how many stents he has had put in. I have been under for five surgeries. I have had conscious sedations twice. There just might be something to his claim.

I can add to the claim though. Throw in raising two kids, well he had three, so throw that one out. I have been through menopause (top that one L), and chemo (trumped you there L). I really believe adding those things with a dash of simply just ageing (after all I now get my $67 a month - because I was a teacher with a retirement plan that used to not add into taking SS away). Yep - I have four things that add up to me being a walking zombie!

I still don't remember my topic. It will come to me when I cannot possible write it down. But we will see!

Peace be with you.

Do you watch Desperate Housewives?

I do, rather I did until I read the paper this morning. All of the stars, except Teri Hatcher, want more money. Those poor little actresses. I guess they are on rice and beans because they cannot afford better food. I guess they are on the streets living in cardboard boxes. Good thing it stays fairly warm in California.

Could you manage on a mere $400,000 per episode. Why of course not. It's inhumane to ask them to struggle on that. Why of course they need more money.

That makes me thing of the millions that sports figures make. Then they want more. What in the world are they spending it one. How can you "need/deserve more money. This boggles my mind.

To my way of thinking, they must sew it together to make sheets for the bed. Perhaps they use it to light fires or candles. I cannot imagine why millions aren't enough.

I laugh when they "fine" sports figures. The amount of that fine is like $2.00 for us. It sounds like it is so much! Ha!

This is despicable when you look at teachers salaries. They have the student's future in their collective hands. Every one talks about education, but when the rubber hits the road, these people disappear.

There are many other jobs where the worker isn't paid a living salary. But coming up with the money to pay these people who are playing a game, and putting on play there never is a problem.

OK, I'm off my soap box. It is one that I have carried for years. I can't understand someone making 400,000 a day of work (I will admit they probably had to work for that one episode, but still!!) wanting more - demanding more. Just can't wrap my mind around such "salary".

Peace be with you (and me!).

I think they need to fire him

I really hate to say that - especially in this time of jobs being difficult to find. I went to the pain clinic today, but that's only to set the locale. When I went to pick up my drugs, the guy picked up a packet, and told me it was $20. That is far less than I usually pay, but the amount does change. I didn't think anything of it.

I got home after the marathon appointment (2 hours). I got my lunch together, and thought I would take two of the pills like I should. I picked up the bag, and there were four bottles there. Mine is three. Then I looked at the name. It. Was. Not. My. Prescriptions!

Fortunately, or not, I have to go back at 4 for PT (I hate it that late) So I can take that poor woman"s back and get mine - IF they haven't been given to someone else.

I was surprised that VISA didn't spot it when he read the wrong name. I heard the name, but thought it could be the pharmacist's name. Didn't happen. I should have snapped to the charge. I didn't.

Every time I go to pick up the meds, it is a complete circus. Normally, there are three or more in there. He grins all the time, and I don't know how he could cause all these problems. A lot of the problems I simply don't know how he screwed up.

As I said, I think he should be fired. He doesn't seem to be able to handle it!

Peace be with you.

And so here I sit.

It is 3:36 in the afternoon. That means only a few more hours of daylight, which brings me to another strangeness in nature - like why don't we have day light savings now if we absolutely have to have it. But that is another day's musings.

I managed to put out the little trees that had lost their stakes. I thought I was so smart when I bought "All-in-One Light Stakes." No - didn't work. They are standing like drunks in the front flower bed. If I get my brains together and find the camera, I will get their pictures before I make another attempt.

I had lunch with DIL, Son, and kidlets. We had a great time. I also found they have the stretchy "ribbon" to make the little head bands for infant girls. My first stop didn't have any, but I went on. I also got some more lights for the outside bushes too. That is why I am bemoaning the amount of daylight. Is it moving me to action, well you can tell!!

My niece sent DIL and Daughter emails through their Facebook pages (gah - she could use their REAL emails or duh, call on the phone)about MIL's 90th birthday. She suggested Dec 26, 29, or Jan 2. She doesn't have to travel - they do. Plus, the 29th is a workday for Son.

I know Daughter isn't just too excited about the whole thing. She remembers all the shuns by MIL at holidays before as it is. She also remembers MIL giving me a huge box full of her children's pictures, then at the 88th birthday asking why Daughter doesn't give her pictures. Anyone got a clue???

So I have played all day. We are off tomorrow for the SSB. When I get back on Tuesday, I have an appointment for another round of injections. I was going to cancel, but I think I have hurt something again. I don't know how that could happen since I put up the tree - alone. What a puzzle!

Hope you are enjoying the season! At least I hope it is a good one since most of the time this year things are not always pleasant.

Peace be with you.

Arggggg

Sometimes I tend to over-react to things. I know that is a strange trait that no one ever knew, but it's true.

When the change-over to digital only TV, I was so anxious to get a small, portable TV that would work when the power went out. Now this is pre-generator. So I was really set on getting this stupid TV. Years ago, we went through a hurricane and were without power for a period of time. G tells me it was something like 6 hours, to me it was days. As I said before - me over-react?? We were without TV. Now if you are able to listen to the sound but no picture that is absolutely maddening. We would be wondering just where the weather was heading and so on, and the weatherman would say - "here's the radar view." Yeah, sure thing. So I vowed I would never be without a TV (sounds a little like Scarlet O'Hara doesn't it)
Anyway, when the changeover was here. A reality. The little Sony had no way to hook up a converter box. Alas - it was obsolete. So where is this going - well to me buying another little TV. I was rabid. I understood that one of the pharmacies here (and these places are another story to me!) had them for $99. Hey - good deal.

I didn't want to go to the one closest because the staff there apparently was just hired in the couple of minutes before I arrive - meaning they know NOTHING. So I wasn't going to trust them. Daughter called on one that had competent staff, so off we went. Ah ha I had my TV.

When I first turned in on, getting the signal was a problem. I turned and turned the blasted thing. If you touched it wrong it went off. I began searching for stations. Our main three wouldn't come in (those being CBS, NBC, and ABC). But I found we had more stations than I ever dream of. In those higher numbers, stations abound. The problem is that I don't speak those languages. They are not just the Spanish language stations - they are almost every language spoken here in swampland.

If you move this thing - you have to rescan. So if you find the station you want, and you move - you lose. You get to rescan. And it is almost a given that you will not get the stations you want. If you want to listen in, say Viet Naimese (ooh - sorry, I massacred that spelling), you are in business.

So I went out to buy a new boosted signal antenna. I knew I had one, but since the advent of cable - I had not used it in eons. Now another $25 is invested in the little jewel. It still won't bring in the channels, and now if you move the antenna OR the TV you don't get a picture.

So now we have the generator. OK - we have the big digital tv - that part is ok, but I know as well as I am sitting here that if (when) we have another storm, I will have lights, and a tv that will have a snowy screen because, bless their hearts, the cable won't work. I have thought about going to satellite or even the ATT system that comes over the phone lines, but there is a feature we get on cable that I love (again another story). So I will stick with cable.

When that storm does hit - you will find me behind the big tv trying to find where to hook up my power antenna, and then figuring out how to make it all work. All of this because I want a picture with my sound. The new phone may be the way I go though. It has local radar available, so that means I have to find a way to watch my soap opera. So you will know where to find me.

Peace be with you.

Passwords

Are passwords some kind of plot to make those who are seniors believe they are losing their minds? It certainly would seem so.

I am plagued by passwords for the bank, and that one requires you always use the same computer. Changing computers has been a trial enough, but that one was really terrible.

I have passwords for my email account. Ok, I have had that one so long I remember it. It usually is recorded on the computer. That makes access much easier.

I have a password to get to the posting here. I password for online shopping places. Those I usually forget in about 30 seconds. Now I even have passwords for the free embroidery sites. I know there are other places that require a password. That, in itself, illustrates my problem.

I am drowning in numbers. Password experts tell us to not use obvious numbers and letters. They tell us to change them often. I only have so much space in my feeble brain.

I so worry about dementia since my dad died of it. I try to make light of the fact I can't remember names, have word call problems, etc by saying that it is menopause brain or it is chemobrain -even though I competed those long ago. If all else fails, I say it is anesthesia brain.

If I can't remember a person's name, just how am I supposed to remember numbers interspersed with letters that constantly change?? Writing them down is not supposed to be a good answer. What is the recourse?

Peace be with you.

Clinic Day

I had PT today, and I was expecting a fairly relaxing time until I realized it was clinic day when I pulled into the parking lot. Well, there will be some interesting people watching.

Now I know I am drugged about to the max. I have caught myself slurring when I talk at times. Today was a BUSY clinic day. It was filled with people who slurred when talking.

On clinic days, there is quite a cross-section of humanity there. There was one lady, with a walker which is not unusual there, who was very talkative. I don't know her age. I thought she was in her late 80's. I was wondering where her "keepers" were because I really didn't believe she could live alone. She had a walker all decked out like the ones I saw when my dad was in the assisted living place.

They have added a TV (damn it all) to the waiting room. Some were trying to watch the program, but the older woman was continuing to talk. I didn't really pay much attention, but it was difficult to avoid. She was talking about having been married for 63 years when her husband died. So that galvanized my feeling about her age.

When she was called back, my attention went to a snippet of conversation. She was talking about having talked to her attorney. Attorneys are big there. A lot of the patients are also in law suits!

The guy next to me had argued with them about the payment. I don't know if he had insurance or not, but he was saying that was the fee they agreed on, and he paid $100, would pay $100 today and on and on. Then he sat next to me (it was crowded!) talking about being disabled since he had the insurance. He, like me at times, was slurring

Now the kicker to the story. I was riding the bike that goes nowhere, I looked up. The little old lady was out of the office. She was driving herself away. I don't know how I will be in about 20 years, if I live that long, but this little gal didn't appear to have the faculties to still be driving. Let's just say I was glad to be off the road.

Peace be with you.

Men - honestly!

G and I have been married 42 years in August, and he still pulls some boner stunts that amaze me! I will swear he is getting worse as he ages!

Today I was here in my usual place during the morning time, reading emails and blogs, dressed still in pj's, when I see the meter reader coming up the driveway. I didn't think anything of it. They come once a month. It's OK. Then the door bell rings, and a knock at the door.

Of course, Simone acts like she is the guard dog that will rip you to pieces. I thought my protective husband would come from the bedroom in the back to answer the door. (He is off today) I waited a bit. He is still back there. I was wondering because I knew he had already spent his half hour in the "study." Fortunately my slovenly housekeeping allowed me to have my robe in here on the tote that we take back and forth to the SSB.

I grabbed my robe, finding that the sash wasn't with it, and head to the door. I am half way there when the charging boxer stops dead in her tracks. I guess she realized that she would get there before me. That might mean she would have to face the intruder on her own. Still no brave husband.

I stumble around the dog and get to the door. The meter reader has to get into the backyard to read the meter. For some reason when we finally got that meter for the generator installed, they put in a regular meter - not one that sends the information. Great. This will be a monthly thing, but where has this guy been for the last few months??

I turn to go to get the gate key. Still no brave man. As I reach the key holder, here is comes. Alas the hero to the rescue. His comment about what he was doing. You won't believe.

"I was in the middle of combing my hair."

WHAT?? I still can't believe this.

Anyway - peace.

What a Sunday!!

We began our day in a normal, peaceful way. We went to Daughter's church because the kids were in the Christmas play. I thought I was going to have to hog-tie G. But, he got over it. They did a great job. Not that I am prejudiced or anything.

Later Daughter and I went to see "Precious." We both read Push, the book it is based upon. We knew what we were in for as far as the language and violence. We both thoroughly enjoyed the movie - if that's what how you want to phrase it. The acting was wonderful. The subject matter is another thing, but these things happen to girls.

What really surprised us was this woman came in to the movie with a little girl not more than ten and another little girl about two. The part of the movie where she entered was some of the worst language, and it went on for a long while. I simply could not believe she brought her children to this movie. It is definitely not a children movie. I really don't understand some people these days. I was very uncomfortable for those girls.

The movie was a good time for us - part of Daughter's 36th birthday celebration. Best of all, it cost us nothing because I had passes from my dentist. His hygienist was ill, and they didn't call me before I got there. It wasn't a problem anyway. The dentist is just right here. G had a gift card that we used for two drinks ($9.50 worth). She drives a company vehicle, so we didn't even pay for gas!

All hell broke loose when I got home however. I walked in, talked about the movie a bit, and G asked "Is the generator still running??" I said apparently, but our neighbors have power. This is about 5:15. We were to meet the rest of the family at 6:15 for dinner. He had been sitting for two hours with the generator running. The problem was OURS! We called the utility company. They did come out - about the time we were leaving. The generator company had me leave messages. The utility company said the problem was ours; we had service. Something was not letting the generator switch back to local power.

We went on to dinner with the generator humming away. I really felt bad for the neighbors, but hopefully since it was cold (for us, I know!!!) hopefully they had their windows closed. It ran all night. I will say, it was kind of neat though. We know it will run the house - at least what we were using for the night. And the motor isn't really that loud. Now in the still of a post hurricane night, that may be a different story for the neighbors. We will just have to provide refrigerator space and ice to make up for things!

This morning, the guy whose "emergency number" I called and left a message, said I didn't do those things, but he sent a crew anyway. They got here about 10 this morning. So we used about 20 hours of natural gas to run our lights. The repairman gave me his card with his direct number. I hope we never need it.

All turned out ok, but for a while there, I wasn't sure. The repairman said he would try to get the company to pick up some of the gas bill, but that really isn't that big a thing. I'm sure it will be about $40, but we now know more about that nice little chest that is nestled behind our garage and keeps the home fires burning!

Peace.

Is it safe yet?

It isn't! Duck under the bed and grab your head.

This "snake-bit" (used it again Shawna!) house we have been messing with since July 2 finally went to closing today. The skies warned us not to go. We had another round of heavy, flooding rains this morning.

I went to the bank to withdraw the money via a cashier's check. It looked like the heavens were breaking finally. The rains were lessening. A good sign? Perhaps. Or perhaps not.

I went to pick up G from work. Usually the traffic on our freeway into town is crowded. There was no traffic. Good omen?

We get into the closing, and the owners are there. I really didn't want to meet them. I knew we were getting the house way under its value. They, like so many others got into trouble with their mortgage, and their mortgage company (according to the woman) wouldn't work with them. She said that they had tried a year ago to get some kind of help, and nothing came about. So I was uncomfortable - very.

All went well - we thought. One sticking factor has been a broken window. Our mortgage company is demanding it be repaired 24 hours after closing. Getting things about the "invoice" have been a joke, but we got one sent to them. We were to have paid it at closing. We didn't. Because the mortgage company didn't include it, like they didn't include the loan application.

The glass company was set to come after 2. We were just barely out of closing at 1:30 when they called. They would be at the house in about 30 minutes. So we had to cancel. I pray they are there in the morning.

Then G called me at 3:30. Our mortgage company demanded that we deliver a check to the title company TODAY or they wouldn't fund the loan. G was furious. But he finally lowered to a mild simmer and went over.

So - he paid. I will meet the glass company tomorrow - if they show before noon. I will have to give a credit card for security until they get the check from the title company.

I. Want. To. Hide. Under. The. Bed. I am beginning to think there is a spell on that house!

Peace.

Comcast vs ATT

Right now I am sitting here using the air card. Yes, I am in my house, with a connection to Comcast. So why am I using a metered service? Simple, because the other unlimited service wasn't bringing in anything.

I still have a few days before my month trial is over with the air card. I found it works at the SSB. I also have to get out of the "dial-up" frame of mind. I am not charged by the minute, I am changed by the bits of information transferred.

When I saw my bill, I nearly fainted. Then I looked in detail. There was the activation fee, a prorated month, and the month fee. I really had used just a bit of the allowed bits. That makes me want to keep it. In reality, would like to keep both services. It is easy (when it works) to use the regular service. I don't have to worry about sizes of files, etc. It is nice to have a service that works when the computer works. But I have to worry. The last thing in the world we need is to spend this kind of money just to have internet access. So, I have to make up my mind - soon.

It's really leaning toward the card. It is consistent. I have it on the weekends when we are gone. Oh my, I really hate to give up that email address. I can't remember who all I have to notify it won't be there anymore. I am glad I have used some of the free email sources for other purposes, like our business. They don't have to be changed.

Oh, life is just so complicated. LOL

Peace

Over my head

Technology. It has left me in the dust!

My internet connection is still wonky. Since Friday, it will be on and off. In fact, as I am writing, my wi fi keeps telling me it is reconnecting to the internet. That is not normal. I KNOW that as soon as I really need a connection - it will be off. That's what happened then. I call Comcast and get them to send a "refresh signal" and it works, usually, for a while.

I really thought I would be able to ditch Comcast and get an air card. I don't think so. The monthly rate is just too high. Daughter and SIL have them, but I think they get a special deal since they are through their business. I don't think my little craft business would qualify me for a special rate. I was really excited about an air card since it would give me access at the SSB, and since we are going on vacation in two weeks, it would give me access then. G tells me two of our hotels advertise free wi-fi. We'll see.

I spent the entire afternoon yesterday trying to transfer music from some of our vinyl collection onto my new Ipod. What a farce!! I finally got one side of one record on the Ipod four times. Not only did I have to learn how to interface the USB turntable with the laptop, I had to learn how to work the Ipod. I am still, obviously, fighting Itunes.

I chose an album that had two lp's. I have all four sides on the computer, but only one resides in Itunes. The others are in My Music. Today I will try to get those files from My Music into Itunes. What a way to spend the day. But I am going to try. We know from experience that traveling in the midwest there are areas that will not have radio transmissions. We thought the Ipod would be a great thing.

So with that in mind, I saw a little thingy that goes into the power port on the car that holds the Ipod, recharges it, and plays through your radio speakers. I was entranced. I ordered it. I don't remember from whom. Guess what! It doesn't fit any outlet in any of our vehicles. It must be for an 18 wheeler. The plastic part that is supposed to go into the hole is way too big. So we are basically back to square one with the exception of the fact that on my last forray into Wal Mart, I picked up some little speakers that are meant for the Ipod and/or computer.

It is sad watching me struggle with technology. I used to be very up to date. I was a go to person at school. I could get the computers working, I could get all the audio-visual stuff working. I could do it all. Now I cannot even hook up the DTV. I am totally intimidated by it. I want to hook up a dvd player to the little vcr/tv (I know - obsolete) that is in the sewing/craft room. I don't know how. Sad.

Time to waste with transferring music now.

Peace.

I don't know were my mind is!

Yesterday was Doodle Bug's second birthday. That's great isn't it. Another birthday. Whoo hoo - let's celebrate!

Only in my mind, I thought her birthday was TODAY! I am really beginning to wonder about my brain. For weeks, I have thought her birthday is today. When I talked to Daughter last night, she was cookin to DB about her birthday.

One big problem - I haven't been shopping for her. I did get the scrapbook made, but still . . . Aaannnnnd, I won't go shopping today either. I bought MY birthday present today after I went to the cardio doc. I am tired of holding my hands up in the air to sew, so I bought a new sewing table that fits my machine and brings me into the 21st century. The arthritis in my next was just too much for me to continue.

But the boxes (some assembly required) are still in the back of the truck. I don't know that I can move them. I can't lift things like I used to. Between the arthritis and the reconstruction that put a back muscle in my chest, I just can't do things.

At least I didn't
forget her birthday, I just had the wrong day!

Peace.

Another headache

My driver's license expires on my birthday this year. No big deal, right? No it is a big deal. This year, everyone whose driver's license expires has to go to the office to renew because the card will be encoded with car insurance information. So when you are pulled over for speeding, the police knows if you have insurance, immediately - I guess.

Now even THAT wouldn't be a problem, but since Swampland is, what, the fourth largest city in the states, we have a lot of people. A lot of people means a lot of people will be having their license expiring on their birthdays. Should still be no problem, but it is. You see, we only have about six offices in Swampland, and one of those is closed for renovations.

This means that the lines are looooooooooong. This means that ol' Grandma K would have to stand for a long time. She cannot do that little thing. Now, in theory, one is supposed to be able to make an appointment. That would probably be true, IF their phone wasn't busy 24/7 (at least I think it is). I honestly believe there is a single line into their office.

To rub salt into wounds, there are two counties close by my house (which is a small city in the far northwest corner of our county) that each have a driver's license office. They have a few citizens in their counties. One of the offices is about 45 minutes away and the other is an hour away. Guess where I am going on Friday! Yes, I'm putting my behind into my car, getting Daughter in Law and Wiggle Worm to go with me, and heading north to a smaller county. While we are there, we will go to a large farmer's market to get our fruits and veggies for the week.

In addition to that problem, the department has a virus infecting their computers. Normally, it take about 45 days to get your renewal. That isn't happening these days. The little paper thingy is expiring before the new card comes. They are asking police to be lenient with expired paper temporary licenses. You can't win in this situation. I foresee a ticket in my future that I will have to take months to settle. Either that, or when we are on vacation, my passport card will not be identification enough, and I will have an expired driver's license.

Life is strange isn't it? At least getting services is.

Peace.

Well . . .

I don't know if I may have gotten a terrible virus, worm, or other unwanted thing on the laptop - my workhorse, or what. I cannot access the internet on it. Even here on old Della, my main email source says it is having difficulties. I'm not sure where the problem is. Plus I HATE working here in the office. I haven't worked in here since I got Gertie.

I guess that's just the way the day is going. The contractor is still an unknown deal. I don't know he is is going to show tomorrow or not. I know him and all. He did a wonderful job on daughter's kitchen remodel. I don't know if it is because the woman across the street was going to use him and didn't. He thinks she is a loon. We are not all loons on this street!! Honest.

I need to call the electrician - again. He tried to come out around Easter - when we were gone/ The last time he was going to come, we had the monsoon. So I guess I'll call - again - since it might be that I am caught here for the next two days.

I love living a planned life - at least I think I would if I knew what one was!

Peace.
